Quiet lifestyle 20 miles from NYC

Winfield is a small community in Union County, about 20 minutes south of Newark, hugged by the Rahway River and the Garden State Parkway. Developed in 1941 as housing for defense workers of the nearby shipyards, Winfield today attracts residents for its quiet cozy ambiance and lower housing prices compared to surrounding neighborhoods. “There’s nature to enjoy around the river, you’ll see people walking or having a picnic,” says Rosmena DeSa, a Realtor with RE/MAX New Millenium. Plus, with the neighborhood comprising just a few streets like Seafoam Avenue and Riverbend Drive, part of the appeal is getting to know neighbors. “There’s an insular, close-knit feel to this neighborhood, but in a good way,” says Sagrario Javier, a real estate agent with EXP Realty. “You don’t hear much commotion from that town, it stays very quiet.” Winfield has one place of worship, Saint John the Apostle Roman Catholic Church, and several small businesses, including a gymnastics facility and a hospice center.

Minimal traditional homes boost the cozy ambiance

“While places east of here have a lot of multifamily homes, Winfield is primarily single-owner homes,” says DeSa. The area's small-town character is boosted by its minimal traditional homes, which often have flourishes of Cape Cod, colonial, split-level and ranch-styles. The facades are streamlined and unfussy, looking out onto carpets of grass. They usually have two bathrooms but can range from three to five bedrooms. Mature trees frame driveways, and some homes have attached garages Prices range from $500,000 to $700,000. Although, as Javier points out, Winfield does have smaller homes that are of the mobile variety. The neighborhood has a CAP Index crime score of 3 out of 10. The national average is 4.

Expansion at Brearley High

The Winfield Township School District provides K-8 education for the neighborhood, but high school students are served by Kenilworth Public Schools. Kids can start at Winfield Township School, which has a 7-to-1 student-teacher ratio and a C-plus rating from Niche. David Brearley High is rated B-minus and is expected to complete a major expansion by 2025, which includes new science labs, athletic fields and an auditorium.

David Wright Picnic House, Rahway River Park

Winfield’s outdoor spaces are a prime amenity for residents here. The David Wright Picnic House opened in 2021 and features cornhole boards, barbeque grills and a covered area with benches and tables. But the main attraction is Rahway River Park, a 6,200-acre municipal park shaded by dense forest. Hikers and bikers have access to a looping trail that tracks the Rahway River. There are also several other zones for staying active, including tennis courts, baseball diamonds, a paved running track, a soccer field, a basketball court and a pool. More adventure is available through kayaking down the Rahway River: There’s a launch site on the south side, near a convenient parking lot.

Shopping and dining at Clark Commons

“One thing about Winfield is that there isn’t much in the way of dining and shopping, so people usually drive to places closeby,” says Javier. One of the closest is Clark Commons Shopping Center, a mile away on the west end. Abundant grocery options include Whole Foods, ShopRite of Clark, ACME Market and Target. Other retailers include Walgreens, Petco and Michaels. And while chain eateries like Chipotle and Duck Donuts are available, some locally owned restaurants are also in this area. White Diamond has been serving diner food in its retro chrome building since 1947. Manny’s Diner offers a slightly more elevated menu and polished experience with seafood entrees and large cakes produced by an in-house bakery, prominently displayed from a glass case. Tarantella's Ristorante can seat over 250 patrons and serves pizza, pasta and wines.

Commuting by bus, on the Garden State Parkway

The Garden State Parkway on Winfield’s west end is a standout feature, whether residents are traveling locally or 20 miles into New York City. Bus lines along thoroughfares like Raritan Road lead out of the neighborhood. Winfield prides itself on being a lowkey place with gently curving suburban streets, and given its rather small size, it’s conducive to those who like to get around on foot.
