From egg farms to a residential hotspot

The chicken and the egg came first in Winnetka, a valley neighborhood that began as an agricultural area and dates back to the 1920s. Today, it's mainly a residential community with various schools, recreation spots, shopping and restaurants. This growth in the neighborhood is partially due to many home seekers being priced out of the central LA market, so residents spread into Winnetka for a great deal since the location is close to LA, plus additional amenities like pools and large lots. "Homebuyers have started to venture out from the core of Los Angeles. Here, for a million dollars, you can get a remodeled house on a nice-sized lot with a private pool. This is a go-to neighborhood for that price range." says Mark Meyer, a Realtor with Nourmand & Associates with over 25 years of experience in the LA area.

Winnetka community centers and bowling alleys

The Winnetka Recreation Center is a central location for recreation and clubs in the neighborhood, offering lighted baseball diamonds, playsets, basketball courts and a variety of community rooms. Clubs include martial arts and arts and crafts, and they cater to various age groups. “The preschool program does pretty well in the neighborhood,” says Diana Sanchez, a rec assistant for the Winnetka Recreation Center for over 9 years. “We also have a bunch of new walking paths and a basketball court.” Locals can head to Runnymede Park for more outdoor entertainment for its shaded walking paths and playset. Indoor fun is found at Winnetka Bowl, a popular local bowling alley that offers billiards tables and an arcade. The bowling alley is also home to Lane 33 Bar & Grill, a restaurant that features karaoke nights and daily drink specials.

A wide variety of California hole-in-the-wall eateries

Brent’s Deli is one of the many popular eating establishments in Winnetka. Having been around for quite a while, locals can always stop by and grab a sandwich or enjoy something from the all-day breakfast menu. Locals can also head to Daglas Drive-In, founded in 1979. “It is a little hole-in-the-wall place, but the food is so good,” Sanchez says. Johnny Pacific is famous for its empanadas that “everyone raves about; I don’t think I have heard a single bad review of it,” Sanchez says. Groceries are available at the local Food4less, and The Northridge Fashion Center has big box stores and other shops for any other needs residents might have.

Midcentury homes with a California feel

Although midcentury architecture makes up the bulk of Winnetka's housing stock, homes built before that era and more recent builds, including townhouses and condominiums, add some variety. "This neighborhood was mostly built in the '50s and '60s, so there is a lot of midcentury modern there," Meyer says. Homes often take a ranch or bungalow style, and Spanish revival architecture features tile roofs and stucco exteriors. Residences usually sport larger front yards than neighboring areas, with plenty of space for driveways and garages. Prices start around $400,000 to $650,000 for condos, and single-family homes range from $700,000 to around 1.2 million dollars.
