Winslow offers commuter appeal, recreation and manufacturing jobs
Located across the Kennebec River from Waterville, Winslow is a popular bedroom community for those who work in Augusta, and it’s also home to manufacturing jobs, community events and recreational opportunities. Johnny’s Selected Seeds is one of the area’s biggest employers, and there are also a variety of manufacturers based here. Fort Halifax Park provides river access, and sports leagues and library programs have plenty to keep kids busy. Augusta is about 18 miles away via U.S. Route 201, and Interstate 95 is nearby.
Homes range from Cape Cods in town to rural farmhouses
Winslow’s town center hugs the east bank of the Kennebec River, and the colonial, Cape Cod and ranch-style homes here sit close together along narrow streets. These typically have driveways that lead to detached garages. Outside of town, farmhouses and New Traditional homes have a more rural feel and can sit on several acres. Prices typically range from around $190,000 to $640,000, though a few homes with luxury amenities can cost more. Low-rise condos in the town center range from $180,000 to $380,000, plus monthly homeowners association fees between $150 and $330. Career-focused courses at Winslow’s public schools
Kids can start school at Winslow Elementary, which earns a B-minus from Niche, and then go to the C-plus-rated Winslow Junior High. The B-minus-rated Winslow High offers dual enrollment and career and technical education courses through Mid-Maine Technical Center. Students can take courses like early childhood education and information technology for college credit, and they can earn career certifications in fields like automotive technology and precision machining.
Routes to Waterville and Augusta
Route 201 is the main thoroughfare through Winslow. Commuters can take it across the river to Waterville via the Ticonic Bridge, and it also leads around 18 miles to Augusta. Interstate 95 is roughly 2 miles away. Residents can schedule bus rides around the area ahead of time through Kennebec Valley Community Action Program. Downtown Winslow has sidewalks, and residents can walk to downtown Waterville via the Two Cent Bridge. MaineGeneral Medical Center’s Thayer Center for Health is in Waterville, and Bangor International Airport is a roughly 57-mile trip.
Riverfront parks, a community garden and plenty of kids’ activities
Fort Halifax Park sits at the confluence of the Kennebec River and the Sebasticook River, making it a popular spot for fishing from the shore. The fort’s remaining buildings date back to the 1700s when the community was founded, and today its pavilions are used for summer kids’ activities like Story Time in the Park. The pedestrian-only Two Cent Bridge crosses the Kennebec River, providing scenic views and a way to walk to Waterville; a park at the bridge’s entrance has a gazebo that can be rented out for events. A community garden off Halifax Street has raised garden beds for rent, and it also has open green space and a playground. Kids can join youth sports programs in soccer, field hockey and basketball, and the Winslow Public Library has programs like an arts and crafts club for kids and mahjong for adults.
The annual Blueberry Festival raises money for a community church
Winslow’s most popular event is the Blueberry Festival, which is hosted by the Winslow Congregational Church. The two-day festival has raised funds for the church since 1972 and includes live music, a blueberry pie sale and a yard sale.
Bay Street restaurants and more options in Waterville
Most of Winslow’s restaurants and businesses are spread out along Bay Street. Bee’s Snack Bar has served classic diner food here for 77 years, and Asian Café serves a variety of Chinese, Japanese and Thai dishes in a casual atmosphere. Locally owned Pleau’s Market has groceries, and there’s a Walgreens nearby. Downtown Waterville is just across the river, offering a walkable area with locally owned shops and restaurants. National retailers like Hannaford, Walmart and The Home Depot are just north of downtown Waterville.
