Outdoorsy locals enjoy direct access to U.S. Route 52, which heads 20 miles straight out to Pilot Mountain State Park. The park is a popular hiking and rock-climbing destination. Closer to home, Piney Grove Park includes three playgrounds for different ages, as well as tennis courts and ball fields. It also has an outdoor fitness center. And Hine Soccer Park is a reservation-only spot to play a game with friends.Magnet high school
Students in the area are served by the Winston-Salem/North Forsyth School District. Many kids start at Old Town Elementary School, which gets a C-plus rating on Niche. Mineral Springs Middle School and North Forsyth High School are the next steps, and both receive a C rating. North Forsyth High School is the district's magnet school for health science and was renovated in 2022. And for higher Education, Wake Forest University is right down the street.Moravian roots
Stonewall/Salemtowne borders Historic Bethabara Park, which preserves the history of Winston-Salem's first Moravian settlement in 1753. With authentic buildings and artifacts, as well as costumed reenactors, the park is a village of living history. Visitors enjoy free stew and can bring the kids to an 18th-century classroom. The holidays are a particularly lively time for the park.
Public transportation and a new Beltway
The Winston-Salem Transit Authority has bus lines that run along most major streets, and by hopping on the nearby University Parkway stop, residents can be downtown in less than 30 minutes. The drive to downtown is about 5 miles but can take up to 20 minutes with traffic. And for those who commute further out, a new highway project expected to be completed in 2030 will extend major highways through the northwest of Winston-Salem, offering more options for traveling west. The eastern section is already open, providing faster travel east to Kernersville, Greensboro and the Piedmont Triad International Airport.Along University Parkway
Though the streets of Stonewall/Salemtowne are quiet, homes sit within minutes of a wide variety of shopping options. University Parkway is lined with big brands, including Walmart, Target, Aldi and Sam's Club. "For food, it's mostly franchise restaurants," Wiley says. "But there are a couple of family-owned places that have ginormous menus and good prices." North Point Grill offers classic American fare in a cozy diner setting, and Francesco's opened in August of 2023 but is already a local favorite for Italian food. The major road also offers access to a movie theater, a trampoline park and the Kaleideum North, a children's science center.
