A small town south of Greenville

Located in the heart of eastern North Carolina’s Pitt County, Winterville was originally an agricultural community before becoming a factory town with the advent of the railroad in the late 1880s, like many other communities in the region. It was the first town in the county to get electricity, prompting a business boom in the 1920s. Today, this satellite suburb of Greenville is still a relatively small town, with a population of about 10,000. But it’s growing at a rate of around 1,000 people per year. Realtor Joe Carteret of eXp Realty says its growth is due to its proximity to Greenville. Just a few miles north, the bigger city is home to most of the region’s major employers, including East Carolina University and the ECU Health Medical Center, as well as manufacturers such as Grady-White Boats, Attends Healthcare Products and Patheon. “The Greenville area is one in which the suburbs contribute quite a bit to the general economy and atmosphere,” Carteret says, observing that homebuyers seek out Winterville over Greenville for its slower-paced, laid-back lifestyle.

Winterville is the “highest point in the county,” and at its founding, was also known for its excellent mineral water.

Traditional, ranch-style and Colonial Revival homes for less than the national median

The median sales price for single-family homes here is over $340,000. That’s higher than Greenville’s median of about $311,000 but lower than the national median of $406,100. On average, homes stay on the market for 57 days before selling, which is on par with the Greenville market but much slower than the national average of 45. Large traditional homes built between the ‘90s and today are common, as are midcentury ranch-style houses. Early 20th-century Colonial Revivals are scattered throughout town, though most are found close to downtown.

There are a number of original homes from the early 1900s in the Colonial Revival style near Winterville's downtown district.

Highly rated Pitt County public schools and East Carolina University

Winterville is zoned for two elementary, two middle and two high schools within the Pitt County Schools system. The district, which gets a B-plus from Niche, serves just over 24,000 kids, with an average student-teacher ratio of 15 to 1. PCS allows open enrollment at select schools, but choices vary yearly based on capacity. Nine schools offer themed programs in subject areas like the arts, global health and wellness, STEM, leadership and language immersion. High schoolers are eligible for dual enrollment courses at Pitt Community College, based on the north side of town. PCC offers associate degrees and certificate and diploma programs in subjects such as business and health science.

East Carolina University is in Greenville, about 6 miles north. The public university offers over 165 bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degree programs. According to U.S. News & World Report, ECU’s Brody School of Medicine is a Tier 1 medical school for primary care. It’s affiliated with the ECU Health Medical Center in northwest Greenville, part of the not-for-profit university health system serving almost 30 eastern North Carolina counties. Melinda Deigan, a Greenville local and United Real Estate East Carolina Realtor, says that ECU Pirates Division I sports are also a big deal in the region, drawing even out-of-state fans for home games at stadiums just north of Winterville.

Winterville Recreation Park hosts annual town events

About a quarter of residents live within a 10-minute walk of one of the town’s three public parks. Winterville Recreation Park, southeast of downtown, is the largest, and it has sports fields, walking trails and a recently renovated playground. It also hosts Winterville’s big annual events, like a summer concert series, the Christmas Parade and the Easter Eggstravaganza. The Winterville Watermelon Festival is a multiday fair with carnival food, local vendors, an eating contest and live music. The end-of-summer celebration has brought the town together since 1985.

Winterville Recreation Park is comprised of 3 youth baseball fields, a large adult softball field, an amphitheater, 1/4 mile walking trail, newly renovated playground, 2 concession stands, roofed and lighted batting cages, 1 large pavilion and public restrooms.

Shopping and dining locally in Winterville’s growing downtown

Small retailers and restaurants line North-South Railroad Street, west of the train tracks in downtown Winterville. The low, rectangular storefronts are clad in coordinating painted siding and vintage brick, and they face the Winterville Library and Winterville Fire Department on the opposite side of the tracks. Realtor Yvette Lewis of Legacy Premier Real Estate, who’s worked with clients here for nearly two decades, says the smattering of local businesses is growing slowly, even starting to bring Greenville residents south. Spots like Dixie Queen Seafood Restaurant have been around since the '70s, while eateries like Coopers Cup and Main & Mill Oyster Bar and Tavern are relatively new additions. National chains are concentrated on the north end of town. “Winterville is much smaller than Greenville, but it’s growing, and on the north side, there, it feels like Greenville,” Lewis says, observing that the business district blends into the Greenville Mall area, making it hard to tell where the town ends and the city begins. “A lot of times people don’t even know that they’ve left Winterville and entered Greenville,” Deigan agrees.

The Pitt-Greenville Airport, which offers daily commuter flights to Charlotte, is less than 9 miles north of Winterville. The drive typically takes about 25 minutes via North Carolina Highway 903, which runs through Winterville’s west side and connects north to U.S. Route 13. The commute to major employers like ECU and the ECU Health Medical Center, closer to downtown Greenville, typically takes between 15 and 20 minutes with no traffic on Highway 903. PATS, the Pitt Area Transit System, operates a fleet of 20 vehicles providing transportation to county residents outside Greenville, including Winterville and other nearby suburbs.

Decline in property crimes, slight increase in violent crimes

North Carolina’s State Bureau of Investigation reports that Winterville saw a 23% increase in the number of violent crimes committed between 2018 and 2023, from 13 to 16. During the same period, the agency reports a 30% decline in the number of property crimes in Winterville, from 95 to 66.
