Lakeside living in Shore Hills

In the subdivision of Shore Hills, life revolves around the waters of Wonder Lake. Spotting boats on the sides of the community's ranch-style homes is expected, and so is watching little ones making the short bike rides to meet up with friends at Shore Hills Country Club Park. A private boat launch grants access for summer laps around the lake and duck hunting in the fall. Beyond its natural attributes, residents value its know-your-neighbor feel when gathering to watch the Wonder Lake Ski Team perform or fill Center Beach for fireworks on the Fourth of July. Similarly, its quiet setting doesn't sacrifice proximity to amenities, with short trips leading to local restaurants just north and the shopping opportunities in neighboring McHenry.

Cruising and duck hunting on Wonder Lake

Shore Hills Country Club Park is where most spend time by the water. “Kids will fly down on bikes or scooters and go fishing off the piers,” says David Crook, a longtime resident and delegate of Wonder Lake Master Property Owners Association (MPOA). “They are always playing on the swing sets or basketball court.” The park also features a private launch where residents can drop their boats in for a day on the lake during the summer. When cooler months roll around, temporary blinds pop up for duck hunting and local anglers try their luck at ice fishing. MPOA cares for the lake and adjacent parks and operates via community fees. Glacial Park Conservation Area is a 6-mile trip north. On its western side, Keystone Landing offers a drop-in spot for kayaks and canoes for paddling the Nippersink Creek. Visitors can also stop by the Lost Valley Visitor Center to learn more about the park’s wildlife and take the pup for a hike along a series of trails flanking off from its parking lot.

Ranch, Cape Cod and split-level styles

The community’s quiet avenues and frequent children-at-play signs support short walks around the block and to the lakefront. Along each are tall oak and evergreen trees sprouting from quarter-acre lots, where it's common to see a covered boat sitting in driveways or on the side of houses. Ranch-style homes built through the early to mid-20th century comprise most of the community, alongside a handful of Cape Cod and split-level styles of the same era. Considering many homeowners are longtime residents, properties don't come on the market too often. Prices typically range from $150,000 to $270,000, depending on size and condition.

Wonder Lake Ski Team home shows

Wonder Lake is home to a namesake water ski team, which won the 2024 Central Regional Show Ski Championships. "All the kids around here were on the team as they were growing up," Crook says. Throughout summer, residents gather at Center Beach to watch them glide across the water for Friday night home shows. The team also performs at Wonder Lake’s Independence Day Celebration. The event begins in the afternoon with a parade on the lake’s eastern side and ends with a fireworks celebration. “People come in from Woodstock and McHenry to watch the show,” Crook says. “They shoot them off the island or barge, and there’s probably 300 or so boats of people watching the show.”

Thursday karaoke at Horizontals

Along Hancock Drive just north of the community, residents can stop by Horizontals for a drink and Thursday night karaoke or pick up daily essentials from Dollar Tree. Busy Bee, a laid-back American diner, sits a couple of miles farther and is a frequented spot for breakfast. Crook notes that when it comes to shopping, most head into McHenry 5 miles southeast. Along Richmond Road are big-name retailers, including Kohl’s and Walmart Supercenter, alongside grocers like Aldi and Meijer.
