Thick forests and some of Connecticut’s best schools
Fans of the show “Gilmore Girls” might recognize the name Woodbridge as the rival to the fictional small town of Stars Hollow. But Woodbridge is far from fictional and increasingly popular for its top-rated schools and beautiful scenery. True to its name, Woodbridge is known for its heavily forested areas, and most of its residents live on out-of-the-way roads on large plots of land. The town is 6 miles outside of New Haven, which is perhaps best known as the home of Yale University. The presence of the Ivy League university clearly rubbed off on its neighbor; in 2011, Woodbridge had the highest percentage of residents with graduate or professional degrees in Connecticut. It continues to have one of the highest-ranking school systems in the state.
Amity Regional Schools are acclaimed across the state
Woodbridge’s highly rated local schools, zoned within the Woodbridge School District and Amity Regional School District, are among the main factors that draw new residents to the area. “One of the reasons we moved to Woodbridge is it has one of the best public school districts in Connecticut,” says Caitlin Hawkins, a manager at DL Search, a notary service that serves all of Connecticut. Hawkins lives in Woodbridge with her husband and daughter. “A lot of families live here, and if someone moves in, they usually have a young child.” Beecher Road Elementary School, Amity Middle School and Amity Regional High School all have an A score on Niche. Neighboring Yale University is one of the most acclaimed universities in the country, and New Haven houses other higher education institutions, including the University of New Haven and Southern Connecticut State University.

Woodbridge guarantees residents a plot of land
The residential parts of the town spread out across heavily wooded areas, and winding roads are dotted with Colonial Revival properties, farmhouses, and ranch homes. The area’s oldest homes date back to the 19th or early 20th century, but more modern builds will often imitate the style of the community’s older farmhouses. The average home size in Woodbridge is between 2,000 and 6,000 square feet, and local zoning laws require each home must have at least one acre of land. Woodbridge homes are also in one of the safest parts of the region, as the town has a crime rate of just 1 on the CAP Index. Most Woodbridge homes range between $500,000 to $600,000, while an 8,000-square-foot estate can sell for over $1 million.

Lush nature preserves lend Woodbridge its name
Woodbridge is known for its beautiful natural surroundings and extensive woodlands. Alice Newtown Street Memorial Park on Meetinghouse Lane is one of the most popular green spaces in town. The park is threaded with creeks and streams and runs along the backyards of many locals. “Our house is right against a nature preserve, so there’s a walking trail next to our house we can get to by going through our backyard,” Hawkins says. The historic town green on Center Road is right next to Alice Newton Memorial Park, and the town green is surrounded by multiple community staples. Tis includes the local library, town hall, and multiple houses of worship, including Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Trinity Evangelical Church and Jewish Foundation of Greater New Haven, which are all on Center Road. The Naugatuck State Forest Quillinan Reservoir Block, a 5,000-acre forest popular for hiking trails and fishing spots, runs on the west side of Woodbridge. To the east side of town is West Rock Ridge State Park, known for its vantage points of the Long Island Sound.
