Woodlawn blends lakeside living and suburban convenience
Removed from Mebane’s urban grid, Woodlawn offers space and a more relaxed pace of living along the treelined shores of Graham-Mebane Lake. Around 900 people live in this woodsy suburb outside of one of the fastest-growing cities in the region. “There’s a lot of new development coming into that area,” says Katherine Burkholder, a Realtor with Re/Max Diamond Realty and a Council Member on the Mebane City Council. “Most of Woodlawn is outside of the city limits, so the houses are on larger lots,” she says. Woodlawn is positioned squarely between Greensboro and Durham , which makes it popular with commuters who want to retreat to the countryside when the workday is done. Above-average schools and proximity to Mebane’s historic downtown and outlet mall add to the community’s appeal.

Large lots and a mix of classic home styles near Graham-Mebane Lake
A web of rural highways and winding unmarked roads connects Woodlawn’s tree-hugged single-family homes, which typically rest on lots of an acre or more. Ranch-style homes are most common, but the community also has farmhouse-inspired Cape Cods, red brick New Traditional homes and Craftsman-style designs. A few subdivisions offer lakefront living, but these properties rarely go on the market. Home prices range from about $220,000 to $810,000. The new North First Street Townes development offers newly built townhouses priced between $280,000 and $320,000. The community has monthly homeowners association fees of around $115. Properties along lakes and creeks rest near or within flood hazard areas, according to flood maps from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Year-round recreation on Graham-Mebane Lake and beyond
Whether they’re cruising around in a boat, paddling in a kayak or fishing from the shore, residents of Woodlawn love to spend time on Graham-Mebane Lake. The 650-acre reservoir is home to a variety of fish, including largemouth bass, catfish and bluegill. A designated ski area hums with jet skis and boats throughout the summer. Nearby, Mebane Community Park features a splash pad, soccer fields and a fitness court for full-body workouts. “We’re also planning multi-use walking paths and greenways all the way from Lake Michael Park to Cate’s Farm Park, and eventually — though this is still years and years out — all the way to Mebane Community Park,” says Burkholder. Indoor basketball and pickleball are popular activities at Mebane Arts & Community Center. Several golf courses are in the region, including the public 18-hole layout at Mill Creek Golf Club, with its namesake creek meandering through.

Mebane offers shopping, dining and North Carolina’s first Buc-ee’s
Woodlawn is less than three miles from the heart of Mebane , where a quaint downtown strip of restored brick storefronts features locally owned restaurants and shops. Filament Coffee and Tea’s bright, modern interior and caffeinated concoctions make it a go-to. Across the street, Crafted serves up street-style tacos with Southern twists, such as pulled pork tacos topped with mac and cheese. Fresh produce and artisan goods draw shoppers to the Downtown Mebane Farmers Market on East Ruffin Street every Saturday morning, from April through mid-November. Food Lion is the closest grocery store to Woodlawn, but Lowes Foods joins national retailers and chain restaurants clustered around Interstate 40. Also by the highway are the Tanger Outlets, a shopping mall with dozens of name-brand stores and several medical facilities, including Cone Health MedCenter Mebane. This area will soon be home to North Carolina’s first Buc-ee’s. “It's sort of like a cross between a Cracker Barrel, a Walmart and a gas station,” says Kelly Osborn, a Realtor with Allen Tate Realtors, who’s lived in Alamance County since 2010. “People are pretty excited about it.”

Commuting around the region via Interstate 40 and U.S. Route 70
Woodlawn is primarily car-dependent, with close access to U.S. Route 70 and Interstate 40, two major highways connecting the Research Triangle and Piedmont Triad regions. “A lot of people live around here for the convenient commuting,” Osborn says. Burlington is roughly 10 miles away. Greensboro and Durham are both about 30 miles away. Residents can catch commercial flights at either Raleigh-Durham International Airport or Piedmont Triad International Airport, which are around 40 and 45 miles away, respectively. Go Triangle provides bus service around the region. However, the closest bus stops for Woodlawn residents are outside Mebane City Hall.
