Rural commuter town with quick access to larger cities
Woodlawn is a rural town in Carroll County among the rolling hills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Two-lane roads wind past farms and pastures, and residents know each other by name. “I was born and raised in Carroll County,” says Blake Goad, an experienced sales associate with Primm Real Estate Firm, LLC. “When you pass someone on the road, you wave. And if there’s no one driving behind you, you stop and talk to them in the middle of the road.”
Woodlawn offers more affordable housing prices and a lower cost of living, making it a desirable spot to live while working in surrounding cities. The town is car-dependent, but commuters can quickly access Highway 58 and 52 and Interstate 77. “In Woodlawn and Carroll County, the biggest employers we have are the school system and the county, but a lot of people travel outside the area for work,” Goad says. “The medical field is huge. You've got the hospital in Galax 10 minutes away, and the one in Mount Airy, North Carolina is 30 minutes away. Within 45 minutes, you can get to at least four hospitals.” Goad also highlights nearby Dublin, where some residents commute for jobs at Volvo and other manufacturing plants.

Home prices and lot sizes draw new residents
Woodlawn has a median home price of roughly $251,000, far lower than the national median. Homes are spread out from each other, with large lots and no HOAs in sight. “Prior to Covid, we didn’t have nearly as many people moving into the area or buying second homes, but after Covid hit, we’ve had a lot of relocation with folks who want to get out of the city and away from the hustle and bustle,” Goad says.
The Carroll County Sherriff’s Office responds to calls in Woodlawn. The department reports crimes as Group A for mostly violent crimes and Group B for mostly nonviolent crimes. Between 2022 and 2023, the sheriff's office had a 6% increase in Group A crimes and a 16% decrease in Group B crimes.

Fishing, hunting and exploring the Blue Ridge Parkway
The Carroll County Recreation Park is the only park in town, but Woodlawn is surrounded by popular Virginia destinations, including the Blue Ridge Parkway in the south and the New River Trail in the east. Goad also points out Crooked Creek as a popular fishing spot, and licensed hunters spend time at the Crooked Creek Wildlife Management Area. When it comes to community events, residents head out of town to join in on the fun. “In Galax, you have the Old Fiddler’s Convention that’s been going on for over 60 years,” Goad says. “You also have the Hillsville Flea Market and the Labor Day Gun Show, and that’s been a huge draw for all my life plus some."
Woodlawn locals can visit the New River for a day of kayaking or fishing.

Harmons Western Wear stays busy with customers and history buffs
Woodlawn’s shops are family-owned businesses that have been open for decades. Residents get groceries at Hershberger's Country Market or the Dollar General farther down the road. Harmons Western Wear sees visitors for more than its range of apparel and accessories. The shop features a small museum full of Civil War-era relics, from banjos and records to farming equipment and black-and-white family photos. “It’s a little museum,” Goad says. “You could walk the whole thing in 15 minutes. For the western wear aspect, you can go by there on Saturdays or Sunday afternoons, and the parking lot will be packed."
