Woodmere is a Long Island hamlet packed with large homes, stores, restaurants and public transportation, all near South Shore beaches. "Woodmere is the ideal location. It's 16 miles to Manhattan, only a 50-minute train ride to the city on the Long Island Rail Road," says Julie Calabrese, a New York Licensed Real Estate Salesperson with HomeSmart Premier Living Realty who specializes in the Woodmere and Valley Stream areas. “It’s convenient because the beaches are 4.3 miles away, and major shopping is right in town.” The convenience of the area doesn’t end with nearby retail, as two highly rated school districts serve the community. Woodmere is a place where Manhattan workers can relax after work and enjoy time exploring local dining destinations or making memories on the shore.

Quick trips on the LIRR to Manhattan
There are multiple places of worship within the hamlet, most of which are orthodox synagogues, including the Young Israel of North Woodmere and Congregation Ohr Torah-North Woodmere Jewish Center. Homes surround the synagogues, and paved sidewalks make it easier to walk to service. The Woodmere Station is on the Long Island Rail Road and has parking space. It usually takes less than an hour to reach the Grand Central - LIRR Concourse, and the train line is a direct path to Manhattan, 24 miles northwest. John F. Kennedy International is one of the country’s busiest airports, and Woodmere residents are 6 miles away. “Having the airport right there is great for professionals who work and people who travel,” Calabrese says, adding that there is rarely noise from the airplanes.

New York homes with plenty of space
Raised ranches, Colonial Revivals and split-levels are close together throughout the community. Each home has moderate yard space and paved sidewalks border many of the narrow roads. According to Calabrese, Woodmere homes are known for being large. Properties with around 3,000 square feet range from $1 million to $3 million. Smaller ones with roughly 2,000 square feet can sell for $750,000 to $1 million. Co-op buildings in the south part of the hamlet have units that often sell for $125,000 to $235,000. “Some properties may be in a flood zone, especially those near the water. It just depends on where the property is,” Calabrese says.

Enjoying the outdoors, swimming at North Woodmere Park
Woodmere has multiple destinations to get outside for some fresh air. There’s North Woodmere Park, which is free for Nassau County residents to use, but the community pool requires a daily or annual pass. Some see what they can reel in at the Doxy Brook Fishing Park or purchase a leisure pass to play at the North Woodmere Golf Course. Families gather at the park throughout the summer for movie nights. South Shore beaches are about 5 miles from home, making it easy to spend the day stretched out on the beach. “Most people from Woodmere are going to the private beach clubs in Atlantic Beach because it’s about 14 minutes away. There are so many beach clubs there,” Calabrese says. “They can go to the Long Beach Boardwalk, but that's about 20 minutes away.”
