Suburban neighborhood close to nature
Much of Zena in upstate New York consists of residential streets winding through dense thickets of trees near the Ashokan Reservoir. From the air, though, there’s an expanse of around 60 acres on its east side that will remain undeveloped. That’s the Thorn Preserve – Catskill Center, where grassland blades sway, ponds ripple and trees along the Saw Kill rustle in the breeze.
The spot offers maintained walking paths that crisscross the open, grassy areas, and hikers stop to admire birds and other wildlife via binoculars or the naked eye. Skiers carve through the snow in winter and bikers two-wheel their way through the preserve. The rugged silhouette of Overlook Mountain, with a summit more than 3,000 feet above sea level, climbs skyward in the distance, making for scenic surroundings regardless of where its visitors roam. “What really attracts me to those towns, and I think for most people, is the scenery,” says Karina Galeano, a real estate salesperson with Keller Williams Hudson Valley North. “You’re in the belly of the Hudson Valley, and you can see the Catskill Mountains. It’s just beautiful.”
The Ashokan Rail Trail has thousands of visitors annually, making it a favorite attraction.

Outdoor recreation and sports
Along with the Thorn Preserve’s accommodations of hikers, bikers and wintertime skiers, the Ashokan Reservoir is one of the region’s most popular sites for recreation. Nearly 200 feet down at its deepest, it’s 12 miles long at its largest, spans more than 8,000 acres of surface and is a primary supplier of water to New York City. Visitors can’t swim in the water, but sailing and fishing are allowed with a permit and hiking and biking are common on the trails surrounding the reservoir. The Woodstock Golf Club sits just northeast and has been in operation for nearly 100 years, with an 18-hole course on its grounds.
The Woodstock Golf Club was named of the top 100 golf resorts in America.

Music fills the air at the Maverick
The Maverick Concert Hall sits just west of Zena and was built in 1916, serving as the “oldest summer chamber music festival in America” in a unique, wooden venue. Below its arched roof, rows of pews offer vantage points for attendees, and wooden slats on the walls allow for its interior lights to beam outward into the surrounding forest.
The town of Woodstock is only about 3 miles northwest and plays host to more area events. Woodstock itself puts on showcases highlighting the neighborhood’s history, including the annual Community Festival of Awakening, art festivals and more. "It's a very small town, but it does have a lot of parks, outdoor trails and cute shops,” Galeano says. "It's kind of like the ideal spot for those who want to enjoy peace and quiet without feeling super isolated."
Woodstock restaurants await Zena customers
Though there aren’t any restaurants within Zena itself, Mill Hill Road in Woodstock serves as the primary restaurant hub outside of the neighborhood. "Zena is really close to Woodstock," Galeano says. "There are some great restaurants in Zena, and you're a hop, skip and a jump from Woodstock." The Mud Club stocks fresh bagels, while Yum Yum Noodle Bar and Cucina serve up Asian and Italian fare, respectively. Oriole 9 is open for breakfast and lunch six days every week, while the family-run Pearl Moon Restaurant serves up three meals a day, pours drinks at its bar and hosts live music. Grocery shoppers head about 2 miles to a Hannaford west of the neighborhood.

Suburban streets winding through dense foliage
Homes are typically secluded along streets lined with trees winding through the region, with the foliage that often separates the properties adding to the overall privacy in Zena. “The main draw is people who come here for the comfort of not having the whole rigamarole of living in the city,” Galeano says. “Zena is expensive because it’s so small, so close to Woodstock and so beautiful.” Ranch-style homes, raised ranches, colonials and split-levels are the most frequently-found architectural designs within the neighborhood, and prices often range between $400,000 and $700,000. A number of custom homes are also found within Zena, and those often cost $800,000 or more; some are even priced close to or above $1 million.
