Suburb feel in the city
Synonymous with a mall that anchored it for decades, Greendale is a residential Worcester neighborhood on the north side of town bordering the suburbs. Single-family homes, chain restaurants and a community college campus exist within its bounds, and Route 12 takes residents and passers-through between Worcester and West Boylston daily. People start their Saturdays with little league games at the neighborhood field, swim in the nearby lake and eat egg rolls considered the best in Worcester. “It tends to be a bit quieter. It borders the quiet side of city, and a quiet town just outside of city. It feels less city-ish,” says Billy McGuiness, co-owner of 1 Worcester Homes and a Worcester native.

Irish pubs and egg rolls
Greendale connects to downtown Worcester via its main thoroughfare, West Boylston Street. Restaurants like Quinn’s Irish Pub line the roadway. The pub pours Guinness and fries fish and chips in a relaxed atmosphere. Live musical performances happen at Greendale’s Pub, and on the weekends, people crowd outside Lou Roc’s Diner to get a seat. The family-owned Eggroll Lady and Fish Shack is revered citywide for its crispy and juicy egg rolls, fried fish and homemade tartar sauce. The neighborhood was once home to the Greendale Mall, an indoor shopping center that had its heyday back when malls were still in fashion. The now-defunct mall will be replaced with an Amazon distribution center.
