Life in Indian Hill: Worcester's former company town above Indian Lake

On Worcester's northern edge, bordering Holden, Indian Hill is a residential neighborhood with roots in the city's ice harvesting and manufacturing industries. On nearby Indian Lake, workers once cut large blocks of ice during the coldest weeks of winter. Much of Indian Hill's residential development took shape in the early 20th century, built as company housing for the Norton Company, an abrasives and machine tool manufacturer headquartered in the adjacent Greendale neighborhood. Set on the southwestern slope above the lake, the community was designed to feel more like a village than a mill town. Today, Indian Hill retains that residential character, and the nearly 200-acre lake remains a draw, with sunbathing, boating and fishing a short drive from home.

An overview of Indian Hill’s housing options

Indian Hill has a suburban feel. Houses in classic New England styles line the neighborhood’s hills, on grassy lots with driveways and mature trees. You’ll mostly find small cottages, Colonial Revivals, bungalows and Cape Cods from the early to mid-1900s in the neighborhood, with a few newer homes built in the 2000s sprinkled in. Prices typically range from the mid-$200,000s to the high $600,000s. “A lot of people like being up that way because it makes them feel like they’re in Holden, without paying Holden prices,” says Billy McGuiness, co-owner of 1 Worcester Homes and a Worcester native.

Indian Lake, Worcester’s largest body of water at nearly 200 acres, sits just south in the Indian Lake East neighborhood. “For its size, it’s not dominated by boats, which is kind of nice to see,” McGuiness says. “It tends to be a little quieter.” Beyond Shore Park, the neighborhood’s closest access point, you can reach the water at Indian Lake Beach, on its eastern shore, and Morgan Landing, the primary boat launch on the west side.
