Historic homes west of downtown Worcester
About 2 miles west of Downtown Worcester, Newton Square is a walkable neighborhood with a beautiful collection of historic homes. “People are drawn to the area for the variety of housing stock,” says Broker Owner Jeff Burk with Re/Max Vision, who has three decades of experience selling in Worcester. In Newton Square, a canopy of hemlock and oak trees bends over sidewalks, picturesque parks are within walking distance and neighbors hang out on their front porches in the evenings. A short drive from the city’s attractions, the neighborhood offers residents a blend of urban accessibility and suburban comfort.

Newton Square’s variety of housing
Roadways in Newton Square are hilly and shaded. Residential areas don’t see much through traffic, and sidewalks line many streets. There’s an eclectic mix of houses, and every property looks different. Large Colonial Revivals with pastel coats of paint sit across the street from quaint Cape Cods with gabled roofs. Most homes in Newton Square were built in the early 1900s, and unique, historic features like stained glass windows adorn many front-facing facades, while crown molding and original stone fireplaces decorate interiors. Due to their age, some properties may need updated kitchens or bathrooms. But Burk says, “People like this area because they can get a home that they can really put a stamp on.” There are some condos in the area, usually inside Colonial-style buildings or Worcester’s signature triple-deckers, and these units typically range in price from $300,000 to $375,000. Some residents also rent. Those looking to buy single-family homes can find two- to four-bedroom properties for about $450,000 to $600,000. 2,500- to 4,000-square-foot homes range from $600,000 to $1.5 million. Properties in the latter price range are the most common, typically featuring four- to five-bedrooms, grand entryways and front porches.

Getting outside at Newton Hill and Elm Park
As the neighborhood’s name suggests, Newton Hill is the neighborhood’s main green space. Wooded trails lead to an open grassy summit, where an American flag waves and visitors can see panoramic city views. The park also has an 18-hole disc golf course, fitness equipment, and tennis and basketball courts. Park Avenue separates Newton Hill from Elm Park, a manicured green space where kids run around on a playground and dog walkers cross bridges over a small pond. When snow piles high during Worcester winters, visitors skate on the frozen water. The Elm Park Summer Concert Series brings out the community for live, local music. Since the early 1990s, Worcester residents have sat on blankets and lawn chairs to watch different performers take the stage. Art in the Park adorns Elm Park with large sculptures during the summer and early fall months. The nearby Worcester Art Museum hosts Flora in Winter, where local florists create arrangements in conversation with the museum’s galleries, breathing life into an otherwise somewhat grey season. General Foley Stadium is also in Newton Square. High school football teams compete on the turf field, and the annual Worcester World Cup soccer tournament draws spectators from all over the city.

Eating out on Pleasant Street
Pleasant Street is the neighborhood’s main thoroughfare. Historic homes, houses of worship, local businesses and restaurants line this roadway. The Shrewsbury Street dining district, with the city’s largest concentration of restaurants, is about 3 miles east. A Price Chopper grocery store is just outside the neighborhood, and St. Vincent Hospital is about 2 miles east.

50 miles to Boston
Newton Square is a walkable neighborhood; however, Worcester is not a walkable city, and residents will probably need a car to access nearby areas. Some buses run along Pleasant Street, but the city’s bus service is known to be unreliable. Downtown Worcester is about 2 miles east. Here, locals can catch a daily train that leads about 50 miles east to Boston, with stops in towns along the way. For air travel, the Worcester Regional Airport, with limited domestic flights, is about 4 miles west, and the Boston Logan International Airport is about 50 miles east.
