What sets West Tatnuck apart from other Worcester neighborhoods

For quiet, suburban-style living within city limits, look no further than West Tatnuck. The wooded neighborhood borders Paxton and Holden, rural towns just outside post-industrial Worcester, and is home to a range of outdoor spaces, from golf courses to waterfront hiking trails. Mature trees and dense brush line the roadsides, adding to the community’s secluded feel. Despite that privacy, West Tatnuck provides easy access to transportation options that can lead to Downtown Worcester, Boston and beyond.

Housing styles and prices in West Tatnuck

Along West Tatnuck’s hilly, shaded residential roads, you’ll see houses with traditional architecture, including Colonial Revivals, Cape Cods, American Foursquares and ranch-style homes. “The houses tend to be smaller than in Tatnuck or Newton Square,” says Katie Bilotta, a real estate agent with ERA Key Realty Services who lives in the neighborhood. “But they’re more affordable. You can easily find a property for under $450,000.” Most homes cost between the low $300,000s and the high $600,000, with the neighborhood’s few luxury properties ranging from the low $800,000s up to $1.6 million. Condos and townhouses are also available and typically range from the mid-$200,000s for one- or two-bedroom units to the mid-$600,000s for new construction in the Salisbury Hill 55-plus community.

West Tatnuck’s parks, trails and green space

The Greater Worcester Land Trust manages several conserved parcels in the area, with hiking trails connecting many of these public spaces. “West Tatnuck is surrounded by a lot of green space between Cascades Park, the Tatnuck Country Club and land that the city owns,” Bilotta says. In Cascades Park, trails stretch alongside a waterfall. Some routes continue to Boynton Park, one of the city’s largest outdoor spaces, with picnic areas, a baseball diamond and a former ball field now used as a dog park. “It might not officially be a dog park, but people bring their dogs,” Bilotta explains. “There are only a few in Worcester, and this is one of them.” For more recreation, Tatnuck Country Club, on the community’s south side, features a private nine-hole golf course, pool, tennis courts and a restaurant. “It’s there if you want to join it, but it’s not the end-all, be-all for the community,” says Joseph Abramoff, a broker with BA Property & Lifestyle Advisors, who has sold many homes in the area. Several lakes with fishing docks and boat launches located in the Webster Square and Columbus Park neighborhoods, including the 20-acre Coes Reservoir, are within 5 miles.

Where West Tatnuck residents shop and dine

For eating out, some locally owned restaurants sit near the intersection of Pleasant, Chandler and Mower streets. You can grab pastries and other treats from Yolk & Crumb or catch a football game at Scruffy Murphys Irish Pub, a popular spot for drinks and American food. Aside from those options and a handful of others, West Tatnuck is mostly residential, with larger commercial areas a short drive away, including:

  • Webster Square Plaza, with a Shaw’s grocery store, Marshalls and several dining options
  • Highland Street, a strip near Worcester Polytechnic Institute with mainstay restaurants like The Boynton Restaurant & Spirits and The Sole Proprietor
  • Shrewsbury Street, Worcester’s dining district, home to a wide variety of cafes, bars and restaurants
  • Howe’s Farm and Garden, a family-owned farmstand that sells seasonal produce and plants in Paxton

West Tatnuck’s education options

Worcester Public Schools serves West Tatnuck. The district offers school choice through citywide magnet and specialty programs, including arts, dual-language and career and technical education. These programs require applications and are filled by lottery if demand exceeds available seats. Open enrollment and voluntary transfers are also available, subject to seat availability and district policy. The highly rated neighborhood elementary school, West Tatnuck School, is known for its strong academics and Project Lead the Way STEM curriculum. “The school tends to have a lot of parent involvement,” Bilotta adds.

4 miles to downtown Worcester, 50 miles to Boston

West Tatnuck may be on Worcester’s outer edges, but it maintains easy access to the rest of the city. “All the biggest employers are just 10 to 15 minutes away,” Abramoff says. “People commute into the city to work at the hospitals and universities, and then they get to come home to a place that’s really quiet.” Here’s additional transportation information:

  • Worcester Regional Airport is located in the neighborhood.
  • A roughly 4-mile drive east leads to downtown Worcester, with UMass Memorial Medical Center and Saint Vincent Hospital.
  • Worcester Regional Transit buses provide routes throughout the city.
  • Interstate 90 is roughly 10 miles south and leads about 50 miles east to Boston.
  • The city’s Union Station, located downtown, has a daily train that travels to Boston.
