Mixed-use area with brick factories and street art
Welcome to South Worcester. This blue-collar suburb of Boston is home to manufacturing and industry, as well as murals, colorful street art and scattered dining options. The mixed-use neighborhood is adjacent to downtown and is partially bordered by an interstate, which increases the noise level. An active railroad also operates in the area, rolling past trees, parks and a large cemetery. Established in 1969, the South Worcester Neighborhood Center has a food pantry and hosts a Toys for Tots fundraiser each year. Close to the College of the Holy Cross and adjacent to the Main South neighborhood, South Worcester might initially seem more industrial than comfortable. But a second look reveals an established area with as much heart as grittiness.
Historic homes mingle with newer construction
The neighborhood is filled with single- and multi-family houses tightly grouped between industrial facilities. This mirrors the area’s early history when the community developed around factories built along the Middle River. Today, there’s a mix of historic homes from the mid-1800s and clapboard, Cape Cod and triple-decker houses. Townhouses are also popular here. “It’s good if you don’t need a lot of yard space but want great commuter access,” says Lee Joseph, sales associate with Coldwell Baker Realty in Worcester with nearly 40 years of experience. Prices range from $355,000 for a small colonial to $530,000 for a four-bedroom ranch-style home.
