Mixed-use area with brick factories and street art

Welcome to South Worcester. This blue-collar suburb of Boston is home to manufacturing and industry, as well as murals, colorful street art and scattered dining options. The mixed-use neighborhood is adjacent to downtown and is partially bordered by an interstate, which increases the noise level. An active railroad also operates in the area, rolling past trees, parks and a large cemetery. Established in 1969, the South Worcester Neighborhood Center has a food pantry and hosts a Toys for Tots fundraiser each year. Close to the College of the Holy Cross and adjacent to the Main South neighborhood, South Worcester might initially seem more industrial than comfortable. But a second look reveals an established area with as much heart as grittiness.

Historic homes mingle with newer construction

The neighborhood is filled with single- and multi-family houses tightly grouped between industrial facilities. This mirrors the area’s early history when the community developed around factories built along the Middle River. Today, there’s a mix of historic homes from the mid-1800s and clapboard, Cape Cod and triple-decker houses. Townhouses are also popular here. “It’s good if you don’t need a lot of yard space but want great commuter access,” says Lee Joseph, sales associate with Coldwell Baker Realty in Worcester with nearly 40 years of experience. Prices range from $355,000 for a small colonial to $530,000 for a four-bedroom ranch-style home.

Skate parks, spray pads and a community center

Worcester has 60 green spaces scattered throughout the city, and South Worcester is home to two of them. Crompton Park, one of the city’s busiest parks, occupies 12 acres along Quinsigamond Avenue. It’s known for its 14,000-square-foot skate park featuring a bowl, rails and a street course. There’s also a seasonal pool, spray park and a year-round playground with monkey bars, swings, and climbing structures. Courts for basketball, handball and tennis round out its offerings. Camp Park is a micro-space with two baseball diamonds and a playground. It’s also home to the South Worcester Neighborhood Center.

Giant murals, specialized academies and incoming freshman

Students might attend Canterbury Street Magnet Computer-Based School, Dr. Arthur F. Sullivan Middle or South High Community School. The high school earned a B from Niche, while the elementary and middle schools are ranked C and C-plus, respectively. Canterbury Street Magnet is instantly recognizable, thanks to the large murals on the red brick building. Sullivan Middle teaches seventh and eighth grades and is home to the Goddard Scholars Academy for academically gifted students. South High is one of Massachusetts’ most diverse high schools. It conducts a jumpstart program for incoming ninth graders to help smooth the transition from junior high.
