Union HIll
Housing options from apartments to single- or multi-family houses
Home prices in Union Hill start in the mid $200,000s and can reach the millions. More than anything, they depend on a property's condition, with single-family homes with modern interiors costing the same as a seven-bedroom home that might need some updating. There’s a variety of housing options here, from two-bedroom, four-square homes to three-story multi-family properties with Victorian architecture. “There are triple-deckers, duplexes and apartments,” says Juliana Danquah, broker/owner of xSell Realty, who has 25 years of experience selling in Worcester. “There are also condos, which are a good option for first-time homebuyers or investors who want to put their money in the rental market. There’s a good mix of buyers and renters.”North High School's brand new building, historic Worcester Academy
Students are zoned for the Worcester Public School District and can attend Grafton Street School before attending Worcester East Middle School. These schools get C-ratings from Niche. Children can finish their public education at North High School, which Niche gives a C-plus. In 2011, North High School moved into a brand-new $5 million, 225,000-square-foot facility. Other academic options include Worcester Academy, a historic, private boarding and day school that receives an A-plus from Niche.Pocket parks close to home and baseball games at nearby Polar Park
On the corner of Houghton Street and Dorchester Street, there’s a small pocket park that is a great place for kids to blow off steam after school. The park is walkable from some homes in the neighborhood, and there’s a swing set, a playground and a few beaches. The neighborhood is only a mile east of Polar Park, home of the Worcester Red Sox – or WooSox – minor league baseball team, a Triple-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox.Restaurants along Grafton Street, small grocers nearby
Several local restaurants and corner stores are walkable from homes in the neighborhood. The Taco Spot is a popular destination, serving various taco, taquito, quesadilla and nacho options. Another local favorite is Victoria Evergreen Restaurant, locally known as “Grandma’s Kitchen”, serving large portions of authentic African cuisine. George’s Bakery is a great option for takeout, where visitors can walk up to the counter and order Syrian meat, spinach or cheese pies. No Name Grocery on Vernon Street has everything, from fresh fruits and vegetables to cleaning products and sodas. This is a great place to pop in and grab something quick. For a more comprehensive shopping trip, head to Walmart on Tobis Way, about 2 miles south of the neighborhood.“The neighborhood connects easily to Kelley Square and all the amenities there,” says Danquah. Around Kelley Square and The Canal District, just across U.S. Interstate 290, there’s an onslaught of shops and restaurants, like The Worcester Public Market, an indoor hub for numerous small businesses.
Easy access to highways, bus routes and Worcester Airport
The neighborhood is bordered by U.S. Interstate 290, which leads north and can start a trip 50 miles east to Boston. Residents are also within minutes of Massachusetts State Route 146, which leads 40 miles southeast to Providence. Bus routes throughout the neighborhood lead to various parts of Worcester. The Worcester Airport is about 9 miles west and will lead locals out of their urban residential neighborhood to anywhere in the world.
