Side-by-side ranch styles and century-old homes on rural roads
“West Tatnuck is known for its diverse housing stock,” says Abramoff. “I’ve had a few houses sell way above asking price and within four days of being on the market.” The neighborhood’s eastern region has an array of midcentury dwellings, including four-bedroom Cape Cod cottages and raised ranch styles with two-car garages. Gambrel farmhouses, Colonial Revivals and bungalows from the 1920s line gravel roads at the community’s core. The southern area is brimming with New Traditional estates sitting on half-acre lots. No matter the style, a house in West Tatnuck typically costs between $500,000 and $700,000, a range slightly higher than a Worcester home’s average $400,000 selling price.Hikes surrounded by sheep or a round of golf on one of America’s oldest courses
“People here love to hike because there are so many accessible options,” says Abramoff. Named for the waterfall at its core, the 120-acre Cascades Park offers four different nature trails, all under 1 mile long. The aptly named Donker Farm Trail is surrounded by a privately owned livestock barn, meaning hikers often pass sheep, chickens and geese as they wander the 20-acre parcel. From the rocky outcroppings at Cook’s Brook to wetland routes in Moreland Woods, the area is filled with numerous other conservation spots managed by The Greater Worcester Land Trust.Founded in 1898, Tatnuck Country Club has the prestige of being one of America’s first 100 golf facilities. The 9-hole course was designed by the famed Donald Ross, featuring a bent grass fairway and water shots. Members can also swim in the pool, play tennis on the clay courts or grab a bite to eat in the dining room. “It’s not a hyper-local club. People from all over the city are a part of it,” says Abramoff. “It’s there if you want to join it, but it’s not the end-all-be-all for the neighborhood.”
From West Tatnuck Elementary to Worcester State University
Children in the neighborhood may attend West Tatnuck Elementary, which has an overall B-grade from Niche. Then, they may go to C-plus-graded Forest Grove Middle, where the Jump Start Program helps incoming seventh graders transition with campus tours and schedule building sessions. Lastly, students can enter a lottery to join the Engineering and Technology Academy at B-graded Doherty Memorial High School. The program offers courses in environmental science, robotics and computer science. With Worcester State University 2 miles south and Assumption University less than 3 miles east, students have several nearby options to continue their education.
Convenience to the Worcester Regional Airport and downtown Worcester
A 4-mile drive east on Pleasant Street Leads to downtown Worcester, where commuters can hop on the Framingham/Worcester Line at Worcester’s Union Station on Washington Square. Interstate 90 is 10 miles from West Tatnuck, making Boston another 40-mile drive east. Bus riders will find several Worcester Regional Transit Authority stops sprinkled along Pleasant Street. “Worcester Regional Airport is in the neighborhood,” says Abramoff. “It has major airlines like Delta and JetBlue. The flight paths go in the opposite direction of the neighborhood, so there’s not any super noticeable noise pollution.”
A cannoli cafe, a local watering hole and big-box shopping proximity
Residents will find a few conveniences at the intersection of Massachusetts Route 122 and Pleasant Street, including a CVS pharmacy. Those with a sweet tooth should stop by Joe Cannoli’s Bakery, a local spot serving its namesake dessert and sandwiches made with imported Italian meats. Scruffy Murphys Irish Pub is a popular spot to watch a Patriots game, sip a brew, and devour bar bites like fish and chips or a turkey club. Grocery shoppers will find a Big Y World Class Market less than 3 miles south on Mayfield Street. Other shopping options like Shaw’s and Marshalls are only 5 miles away in the Webster Square Plaza.
