Rustic living with access to I-99

Worth Township, 17 miles from State College Borough, is forested and surrounds Port Matilda Borough, the only community in the area. “We’re not a metropolitan area,” says Jacqui Chiarkas, an associate broker and owner of BHHS Home Edge Realty with 20 years of real estate experience. “We’re in central Pennsylvania.” While the borough is now a brief pitstop along Interstate 99, it was a major stagecoach stop in the 1800s. The Port Matilda Hotel & Tavern, still present today, was built to house weary travelers passing through the small town. The McFeely Brick Company also made a home for itself in Port Matilda and was the area's primary employer until 1959, when it was sold and then promptly closed. Now, the small community and surrounding landscape is a rural area with a smattering of farmland that stretches along the edge of the Appalachian Ridge and Valley Province. Residents enjoy the solitude and proximity to State College without the urban lifestyle. “Worth is kind of rural, but it's a real quick commute to State College,” says Chiarkas. “Depending on where you're at, you might be 15 or 20 minutes away.”
