Small-town living by Joint Base McGuire–Dix–Lakehurst

Thirty-seven miles east of Philadelphia, Wrightstown is a New Jersey borough in Burlington County, just outside Joint Base McGuire–Dix–Lakehurst. "Most of the people in Wrightstown are military or civilians working on the base," says Freda Gorma, municipal clerk of Wrightstown. "It's a suburban feel but very heavy on business and rentals." The borough is less than 2 square miles, so amenities are limited, except for a diverse range of casual restaurants. "It's a small town," Gorma says. "A lot of people seem to know each other, but you also have that rental and military aspect of more transient people living here."

Ranch and Colonial-inspired home styles with unique charm

Wrightstown's single-family homes were built during the mid to late 20th century and are generally ranch-style or Colonial-inspired, with most varying door-to-door in color, shape and size. Residential streets are typically lined with sidewalks, traditional mailboxes and lawns dotted by mature oaks and maples. Street parking and uncovered driveways are typical, but there are also a handful of attached garages. Some properties are bordered with chain-link fencing, and many feature covered porches or patios. Homes rarely go on the market, but prices range from about $150,000 to $450,000, depending on a home's size and features. The median home price is $350,000, compared to the U.S. national median of about $420,000. Roughly half of the borough's residents are renters, so real estate is especially desirable for property investors.

At Bordentown Regional High, teens can take dual-enrollment courses for credit at Rowan College at Burlington County, Fairleigh Dickinson University and Stockton University.

Sports and relaxation at Burlington County Parks

Crowshaw Park is the borough's only park, but it has a little of everything. "There are tennis and basketball courts, a baseball field, a pavilion with picnic tables, a bike path and exercise equipment," Gorma says. The Wrightstown Borough Playground is also part of the park, which includes two play structures, one for toddlers and one for older kids. Nearby, ThunderBowl Lanes is the spot to bowl with a pint of beer. Five miles away, the tree-lined, dog-friendly Juliustown Park offers a playground, a basketball court and fields for soccer and baseball. There's also a Burlington County Troll sculpture named "Kevin" at the park, created from recycled materials. Kevin is one of 19 sculptures in Burlington County, and troll hunters can follow the county's map through dirt-packed trails to find them all.

Dining with flavors from around the world

The borough's restaurants are surprisingly diverse for such a small community. In addition to fast-food staples like Taco Bell and Dunkin', there's a wide range of locally owned eateries with international flavors, including Chinese, Italian and Afghan — to name just a few. Tokyo C is a highlight for sushi, and Casa Bori features Puerto Rican favorites like tostones and chicharrones. There's also Sebastian's Schnitzelhaus with a charming old-world setting and homestyle German fare, including spaetzle, pan-fried schnitzel and bratwurst with sauerkraut. After dinner, New Kelly's Bar & Banquet Hall is the local watering hole for beer on tap.

There's a Dollar Tree and a Dollar General for quick groceries and household items. La Poblanita Grocery has specialty Mexican ingredients, and next door, Luna Bakery offers freshly baked goods, including Mexican sweet bread. Gorma says residents go to Burlington or Hamilton Township, about 15 and 20 miles away, for more grocery options. "That's where they have a ShopRite, Walmart and other grocery stores," she says.

Burlington County Farm Fair

Wrightstown has a few annual holiday traditions, including an Easter egg hunt and tree lighting on the first Saturday of December. "Santa Claus comes to visit, and we have all kinds of goodies," Gorma says. "Last year, we had a shelter bring exotic animals for the kids to see — an alligator and tarantula." Wrightstown also participates in Burlington County's annual events, some held six miles away at the Burlington County Fairgrounds. July's Burlington County Farm Fair is one of the largest, offering festival fun like carnival rides, food vendors and arts and crafts. Fairgoers can check out farm animals and antique farm equipment or get competitive in 4-H events and the tractor pull competition. There's also the Red Eye Rodeo, with everything from bull riding and calf roping to steer wrestling and barrel racing.
