A small Michigan city with an active downtown along the Detroit River
Just 15 miles southwest of Detroit, Wyandotte is a small city perched along the Detroit River. Named after the Wyandot tribe, who lived in the area in the 1700s, this Wayne County suburb is now home to about 24,000 residents. Like most cities in metro Detroit, Wyandotte has roots in manufacturing as it was once home to the Eureka Iron Works, the first mill in the United States to produce steel using the Bessemer Process. These days, it mixes an industrial feel with a quaint downtown, waterfront views and longstanding homes.
“It’s a close-knit community," says Malory Bulkhalter, co-owner of Downriver Homes and lifelong resident. “The people look out for each other, and the city pours into the city and residents.”
In recent years, Wyandotte has heavily invested in its downtown and built a new sports complex and community park. Plans for the city include building new housing and improving landscaping and signage.
Bungalows are the most prevalent home style found throughout Wyandotte.

Downtown Wyandotte is built along Biddle Avenue, just north of Eureka Road. The restaurant scene has a variety of bars and gastropubs, plus cuisines ranging from Asian to Mexican. Locals can also browse clothing boutiques, furniture stores and art galleries.
“Most of our businesses are owned by people who live in Wyandotte,” Bulkhalter says. “We have a lot of newer ones, but we have a lot of historical places, too. Stores like Chelsea, Willow Tree and Nanna’s Kitchen, I mean, they’ve been there for 30-plus years.”
The Wyandotte Social District overlaps downtown and is an “open container” district, meaning pedestrians can sip alcoholic beverages purchased from local establishments as they shop. This creates a laidback ambiance and a lively atmosphere during special events like pub crawls. For weekly grocery runs, options are concentrated along Michigan state Route 85, the city’s western boundary.

Golfers also get scenic views at the Wyandotte Shores Golf Course overlooking the Detroit River. Additionally, Wyandotte Skate Park gives skateboarders, rollerbladers and BMX bike riders a place to hone their skills.

Driving into Detroit and biking down Biddle Avenue
Interstate 75 is about 5 miles west of Wyandotte, but drivers can head up M-85 to reach nearby cities, including Detroit. The Detroit Metro Airport is a straight shot down Northline Road, about 12 miles west. This airport offers nonstop flights to over 140 destinations. Within Wyandotte itself, Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital is centrally located near other medical facilities. Bus stops line Biddle Avenue, while cyclists and pedestrians can also use the paved path parallel to the road. Additionally, legislation was passed in 2023 to provide funding for overpasses and underpasses – this will reduce traffic at the city’s railroad crossings, with sometimes-heavy freight traffic running parallel to Biddle Avenue around the clock.
Crime and environmental awareness
According to the FBI, Wyandotte’s violent crime rates decreased between 2021 and 2022 while also remaining below the national average. The city also saw a decrease in property crime rates.
The city has several environmental factors to be aware of. The Downriver Wastewater Treatment Facility is located at the city’s southern limits in an industrial area away from residences. A chemical manufacturing plant in Wyandotte is a source of polluted groundwater that flows into the Detroit River; there are plans to filter out the pollutants in this water, but the process will take several years. However, recent tests on drinking water have proven it to be safe.
Like the rest of southeast Michigan, Wyandotte experiences all four seasons, including heavy annual winter snowfall. While not prone to natural disasters, flash flooding is possible.
