Central Yakima offers a quiet and convenient lifestyle
Tall, leafy trees and quiet suburban streets make Central Yakima one of the most sought-after neighborhoods in the city. “It’s a prestigious neighborhood with mature landscaping and lots of trees. It’s just really picturesque,” says Jenifer Watson, a real estate broker with Re/Max The Collective who has sold several homes in the area. “It’s like a quaint little nostalgic town. People watch out for each other, and there’s pride of ownership in the area.” The vast neighborhood stretches from 16th Avenue west to 40th Avenue, and from the Naches River in the north down to Ahtanum Road. The scenery of the community’s streets extends to several parks that offer a wide range of activities. Despite being primarily suburban and residential, Central Yakima puts residents close to locally owned businesses, schools and major employers of the Yakima Valley.
Early 1900s and midcentury homes in suburban Yakima
Central Yakima has an array of housing styles throughout the community. Much of the area features midcentury ranch-style homes and cottages on wide streets. Pines and other trees are scattered throughout the front yards. Sidewalks are uncommon, but the lack of traffic allows homeowners to stroll through the neighborhood. Chestnut Avenue and Barge Street are in the heart of the community and have some of the houses with the most character. “One cool little cross-section of the neighborhood is the Barge Chestnut area. It has a kind of old-world charm, and the houses are Victorian,” says Gil Martinez, Watson’s husband, who is also a real estate broker at Re/Max The Collective. In addition to Victorians, buyers can also find stone and brick Tudors along these streets. Chestnuts and elms extend their branches over the roads, creating a shady canopy. The median sales price for a single-family home is around $440,000.
Local parks offer year-round indoor and outdoor fun
Multiple parks make it easy for residents to get outside and enjoy recreation in the neighborhood. Franklin Park on Tieton Drive has the city’s only outdoor swimming pool, plus tennis courts, pickleball courts and a playground. The park hosts the annual Summer Sunset Concert Series, free concerts on Fridays in July and August. Chesterly Park is a large green space in the neighborhood’s north side, with several soccer fields, a walking path and a skate park that Martinez and Watson say is their son’s favorite skate park in Yakima. The YMCA Aquatic Center at Chesterly Park offers year-round fun with a lazy river, slides and multiple pools. The center also has swim lessons and aquatic exercise programs.
Locally owned shops and restaurants fill the streets of Central Yakima
Locally owned businesses in the neighborhood range from boutiques and gift shops to upscale American eateries. WaterFire Restaurant & Bar serves Pacific Northwest dishes with international twists and flavors. Zesta Cucina is an Italian spot known for its salmon and halibut. Fiddlesticks is a boutique that has been open since 1976, selling décor, clothing, jewelry and gifts. Other stores in the area include hardware stores, thrift shops and pharmacies. Groceries are available at Safeway and Fred Meyer.
Education options from kindergarten through college
Students might attend Nob Hill Elementary School, rated a C-plus by Niche, and Wilson Middle School, which gets a C. Eisenhower High School receives a C-plus and has a graduation rate of 85.5%. The school offers dual credit courses through Eastern Washington University and Central Washington University. Students can also take several Advanced Placement classes. Activities at Eisenhower High include athletic training, folkloric dance, Mariachi and STEM clubs. Yakima Valley College has around 6,800 students and offers bachelor and associate degrees.
Highways, buses and city streets offer convenient commutes
U.S. Route 12 runs along the neighborhood’s north side, connecting to Interstate 82 to the east or leading west through Washington. Thoroughfares like Lincoln Avenue, Summitview Avenue and Nob Hill Boulevard lead to East Yakima and West Valley. Multiple Yakima Transit buses serve the neighborhood, connecting to all corners of the city. MultiCare Yakima Memorial Hospital on Tieton Drive is a major medical center and one of the area’s largest employers.
