Yatesville, a borough 2 miles outside of Pittston, allows people to establish roots in their community. “Our neighbors have been there for 20 years,” says Gina Warnagiris, owner of local business RCG Crystals. While she has only lived in Yatesville for a year, her parents lived there for more than 20. The area is primarily residential, and forests separate some industrial sites from homes. The borough is zoned for the Pittston Area School District, where students can engage in academically challenging activities. Most essentials, including grocery stores, are located a short drive away. “Everything is within a 10-mile radius,” Warnagiris says.

Variety of architectural styles in Yatesville

Houses in Yatesville sit on the front of large lots, many nestled among small bushes and trees. The grassy lawns extend to the wide roads that leave room for street parking. A variety of mid-20th century homes fills the neighborhood, including ranch-styles and farmhouses. These older three-bedrooms cost between $125,000 and $275,000. There are some newer homes in the area, including Maple’s Edge, a row of identical townhouses with colonial influences constructed in 2006. Prices for these tend to fall between $90,000 and $100,000.

Yatesville attends Pittston Area Schools

Students in the borough can attend the Pittston Area School District, rated C-plus by Niche. Kindergarten and first grade are completed at Pittston Area Primary Center, which earns a B-minus, while Pittston City Intermediate School, rated C, teaches second through fourth grade. Pittston Area Middle School, with a C-minus, and Pittston Area Senior High School, receiving a B-minus, allow students to compete in the Pennsylvania Science Olympiad. Students across Pennsylvania participate in 23 STEM-related challenges that meet Pennsylvania and National Science Education Standards.

County bus takes people to and from Yatesville

Luzerne County Transportation Authority (LCTA) runs a bus route that takes residents of Yatesville to neighboring boroughs. LCTA features a rideshare program for residents who need more direct transportation. Rides must be scheduled a day in advance. The borough is 5 miles from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport, offers flights to the most popular US destinations and connects to international flights. Interstate 81 runs next to the neighborhood and leads drivers into New York City, which is a 130-mile trip, or about two and a half hour long, drive.

Lombardo’s Market is a locally owned store and deli in Yatesville, known for its Italian sandwiches, that is a staple of the community. People do most of their grocery shopping at Weis Markets, 5 miles away, or Aldi, 2 miles away. Pittston Cross Shopping Center has several shopping and dining options and is a 3-mile drive. Walmart is also 3 miles from Yatesville, and Lowe’s is 6 miles. Warnagiris said that she would get dinner at Agolinos in West Pittston, and it is common for people to grab a bite to eat at the restaurants in neighboring boroughs.

Revolution Ice Center builds community

In the middle of the neighborhood is Yatesville Borough Park, which features a colorful playground and swing set. People can play ball at the basketball courts or walk around the paved path that circles a grassy field.

Revolution Ice Center, across Interstate 81, is an indoor ice-skating rink. Besides public skating, people can join the youth hockey team, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights, or take skating and hockey lessons. The center also partners with nonprofits and community organizations for service projects, including employees volunteering in the local soup kitchens.

Neighboring boroughs host events

Nearby boroughs almost always have something going on. Kingston is 8 miles from the neighborhood and hosts an annual Veteran’s Day Parade that celebrates community members who served in the military. The annual Tomato Festival is held 2 miles away in Pittston. It features a 5k run, the Little Mr. and Miss Tomato pageants and a competition for the largest, smallest, ugliest and most perfect tomatoes.

Large industrial presence in Yatesville

There are several industrial companies and distribution centers in the borough, which increases the number of trucks driving through the roads. A forest separates most of these industrial sites from the residential neighborhood, with the exception of R.C. Moore Inc., which is separated by a railroad. Residents on the other side of the tracks can expect increased noise from the trains.
