Urban Core Neighborhood in Yonkers, New York
Westchester County 10701, 10705
Sandwiched between the Hudson River and Broadway on the western edge of Yonkers, Downtown Yonkers allows residents to enjoy an urban lifestyle right by the waterfront. Yonkers itself is the biggest city in Westchester County and the fourth biggest city in New York State, so Downtown Yonkers is always bustling with activity. Only 15 miles from Midtown Manhattan, it’s not uncommon for residents to commute to work in the city or visit for a fun day trip. Most homes in Downtown Yonkers are detached multi-story colonials, with a couple of condominium complexes offering the option to live right at the center of Downtown Yonkers.
On the southern end of the neighborhood, Anthony O’Boyle Memorial Park’s large playground and paved running and biking trails make it a popular destination for locals. Residents also love to walk by the water at Esplanade Park or find a spot to go kayaking, such as Yonkers Paddling and Rowing Club. Just off Main Street, where most of the neighborhood’s restaurants and businesses are gathered, Van Der Donck Park offers a peaceful spot for residents to rest and enjoy watching wildlife around a revitalized section of the Saw Mill River.
Turning onto Main Street, you’ll find a wide selection of restaurants, cafés and bars. Guapo Mexican and Cuban Cuisine is an immensely popular restaurant among locals for its delicious fusion of Mexican and Cuban foods and its weekly drag shows. You can also treat yourself to an upscale dinner on the waterfront at the Michelin star restaurant X2O Xaviars on the Hudson.
With its large lawn and long, low-lying plantation-style brick exterior, the Philipse Manor Hall stands out against the rest of Downtown Yonkers. Built in 1682, the manor house is easily dwarfed by the modern buildings around it and maintains many of its original features, such as a Rococo ceiling and original iron firebacks in the fireplace. The house is now a museum focusing largely on the Civil War.
Riverfest brings residents together in a yearly celebration that involves live music performances in a variety of styles, from jazz and soul to rock and hip-hop. The event also showcases an array of food, art, local vendors and activities for kids such as rides and face painting.
