Homefield single-family homes and twin homes from $500,000
While prewar Tudor cottages and 1970s Colonial Revival homes pop up along winding, hilly blocks, the bulk of Homefield is made up of the ranch-style homes, Cape Cods and minimal traditional homes that built up suburban starter-home neighborhoods in the1940s through 1960s. Single-family homes typically sell for $500,000 to $700,000. On the northern stretches of Hoover Road, boxy twin homes offer similar bedroom and bathroom counts in more vertical floorplans. “The attached twin houses tend to be the same prices as detached single-family homes. A lot of neighbors will try to do the roofs and siding at the same times, but you can see when they disagree. The siding and roofs will be a little funky, done in different colors,” Tickell says. While many homes are built beside or over single-car garages, lines of street parked cars shaded by mature trees are common throughout Homefield. Homefield has a CAP Index crime score of 2 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.Yonkers Tennis Center and the North-South County Trailway
At Yonkers Tennis Center, tennis and pickleball players of all ages book private lessons, open court times and group clinic sessions. The North-South County Trailway parallels Homefield to the west, taking cyclists over 36 miles of paved paths along the route of the former Putnam Division of the New York Central Railroad. For classic community park amenities, Kardash Park’s playground and baseball diamond are just south of Homefield. Sprain Ridge is a massive 278-acre destination park about 2 miles from the neighborhood, attracting visitors from across the region to explore miles of wooded hiking and mountain biking trails, tee off on an 18-hole golf course or take a dip in a Westchester County swimming pool.Magnet healthcare programs at Gorton High School
Yonkers Public School District operates on a school choice system, allowing parents to make attendance decisions based on proximity and magnet programs. Kids might attend prekindergarten through sixth grade at School 22 in nearby Nepera Park before attending seventh and eighth grades at William Boyce Thompson School, both of which earn a C from Niche. Gorton High School earns a B-minus and is known for medical profession magnet programs, including a clinical healthcare program through which students can become certified in CPR/AED.League nights and chatting with Pepper at Homefield Bowl
The 32 lanes at Homefield Bowl reflect colorful disco ball light and music videos broadcast on big screens, creating a classic hometown bowling alley vibe that peaks on weekends and continues until 1 a.m. Leagues host regular practices and tournaments, including Parkdale Mixed, a local league with decades of history that was named after a former bar. Over the sound of pins scattering on the lanes, bowlers overhear conversations other visitors are having with Pepper, a chatty, interactive robot. Of the resident android, daytime manager Mary Wirchansky says, “She looks like a little white Martian. They built a house for her because the way our bowling alley is situated, they haven’t been able to map her to go out and greet people yet. So, all the kids go over to her, say, ‘Hi Pepper, how ya doing?’” When kids aren’t talking to Pepper, they can free bowl or join Jo Limekiller Memorial Youth leagues to qualify for scholarships.Saw Mill Run Parkway, I-87 and Bee-Line bus commuting
Interstate 87 and the Saw Mill River Parkway cradle Homefield, the latter being the easiest route for the 5-mile drive to downtown Yonkers. Starting down I-87, commuters have a 25-mile drive to Manhattan. Homefield sits between Greystone and Crestwood stations, offering access to the Hudson and Harlem lines of the Metro-North Railroad. “I’d always go to the main Yonkers Hudson Line station because you can catch local trains as well as an express train,” Tickell advises. From Yonkers Station, Metro-North riders have a roughly 45-minute trip to Grand Central Station while those who board an Amtrak Empire Service train can be at Penn Station in 25 to 30 minutes. Bee-Line buses make stops along Saw Mill River Road on the way from Harrison to downtown Yonkers. St. John’s Riverside Hospital is about 2 miles away, and Westchester County Airport is about 18 miles to the northeast.Shopping and dining on Saw Mill River Road
Saw Mill River Road lines the western side of Homefield with auto lots, warehouses and a few small restaurants. Seven Brothers Diner is open from early in the morning to late in the evening, serving diners sitting on retro counter stools and along a wall of old-school booths. Further up the road, Homefield Diner & Restaurant is a family-owned staple for rotating hot food items and convenience offerings, and Clarke’s offers classic neighborhood bar ambiance and Irish brews. Costco, Stew Leonard’s and Home Depot draw shoppers to big box footprints that sprawl at the center of Homefield. Ridge Hill Mall is about a mile away from home, positioning dozens of major retailers like Old Navy, Dick’s and Whole Foods around blocks of connected, open-air courtyards.
