Nepera Park's draws include NYC proximity, views of the Hudson
Divided by the Saw Mill River Parkway, Nepera Park, 5 miles from downtown Yonkers and 21 miles from New York City, is a tiny neighborhood bordered by the trendy Hastings-On-Hudson and Homefield. This unassuming community has a sizeable inventory of homes and mom-and-pop restaurants. The neighborhood has some points to the west with views of the Hudson River. “People live here because of location,” says Sara Reel, a local real estate agent at Julia B Fee Sothebys International Realty. “That particular location is right off the highway, so it's pretty accessible and it's not far from the Yonkers waterfront.”
Commuters use New York 9A and Hastings-On-Hudson train station
State Route 9A takes commuters into New York City in under an hour. Hastings-On-Hudson's train station is 3 miles away and offers transportation to Grand Central Terminal in 46 minutes on the Hudson Line. The Bee-Line bus stops along Saw Mill River Road provide public transportation around Yonkers and Westchester County. While the parkway dividing the neighborhood may generate noise, a line of thick trees buffers homes, and no houses line the roadway. “Saw Mill River is not a commercially driven road,” says Reel. “It’s a two-lane parkway on both sides.” Saw Mill River Parkway and Interstate 87 lead to LaGuardia Airport, 18 miles away. St. Johns Riverside Hospital provides emergency services and medical care 2 miles away.
Nepera Park offers single and multifamily homes
Gridded streets on either side of the parkway are lined with narrow sidewalks. Most homes are brick and vinyl with small, manicured front yards and a larger, fenced-in backyard. Cape Cod, Colonial Revival and minimal traditional homes are common in the area, ranging from $580,000 to $750,000. Multifamily homes range from $975,000 to over $1 million. The Grey Oaks co-op is the only co-op in the area and offers units ranging from $120,000 to $280,000. The CAP Index crime score is a 2 out of 10, below the national average of 4.
Shopping and dining in Nepera Park
Lanterns and tree branches hang from the ceiling of the botanically decorated La Lanterna Restaurant Wine & Beer Garden, a popular eatery in the area, serving a mix of Italian and Swiss dishes. Italian food is plentiful in Nepera, and the Bella Rosa Pizzeria is a local favorite, offering a menu of pies and Italian dishes made with locally sourced ingredients. Diners get dessert next door at Domenick's Nepperhan Italian Pastry Shop. Ridge Hill, 3 miles away, has chain retailers, eateries and entertainment venues. Reel says the mall was renovated recently but is under construction again as a stage is being added for performances. Groceries are 3 miles away at Stew Leonard’s and Costo in Homefield.
P-Tech at Barack Obama School for Social Justice
Yonkers Public Schools, which receive a B from Niche, serve the Nepera Park area. Yonkers schools are open enrollment, and students may apply to attend any school in the area. The closest schools to Nepera are School 22, which gets a B-minus, for prekindergarten through sixth grade and the Barack Obama School for Social Justice, which receives a C, for seventh through 12th grade. The Barack Obama School for Social Justice offers a P-Tech program for students interested in environmental studies and computer science. This course allows students to get a head start in these fields and gain hands-on experience.
Walking along the North-South County Trailway
Westchester’s North-South County Trailway runs through the area alongside the Saw Mill River Parkway. Locals can run, walk or bike south toward the Bronx in New York City or north toward Yorktown on this paved and woodsy 36.2-mile trail. The 3 acres of Rev. Roy Richter, OFM CAP Park take up a sizeable chunk of Nepera Park, offering sports fields, playgrounds and basketball courts. The lovingly preserved community bowling alley, Homefield Bowl, offers bowling leagues and tournaments in 1970s-style decor for indoor recreation.
Farmers market in Hastings-On-Hudson
Local vendors sell oysters on the half shell, fresh bagels and other produce at the Hastings Farmers Market every Saturday in Hastings-On-Hudson. The year-round outdoor farmers market is 2 miles away and has been a neighborhood staple for 26 years. Religious services are held at St Mark's Episcopal Church, Calvary Chapel of Grace & Truth, St. Anthony's Catholic Church and other houses of worship in and around the area.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
