Kittery Point
Landmarks and beaches in Kittery Point
With water surrounding the neighborhood, it is no surprise that the coast is a popular destination for residents and tourists. “The minute the park is open, everybody goes to the beach,” Perkins says. Several of these beaches are at Fort Foster, which sits on the tip of Gerrish Island and features trails and beaches with views of the Whaleback Lighthouse. Seapoint Beach is another popular destination for swimming and sunbathing. “It’s a great place to watch the sunset,” says Realtor Lisa MacBride with Gove Group Real Estate, who has worked in the area for over 20 years. The Cutts Island Trail is a 2-mile trail that winds through part of the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge. There is also plenty to do in Kittery Foreside, with the Kittery Art Association showcasing local artists and the community center hosting clubs for all ages, live theatre and monthly family meals. Besides offering a wide selection of books, the Rice Public Library has museum passes, a game room and a calendar of programs. “We show movies twice a month and have author visits,” Perkins says. The library is also working with the town on Book & Big Ideas. This community-wide program encourages residents to discuss important topics such as diversity and climate action through reading.Homes on the water
Waterfront homes sit on the rocky coasts along the cove, with back balconies overlooking the lighthouse and private docks. Trees surround the inland residences. While there are some new traditional houses throughout the neighborhood, most properties were built in the 20th century, although there are a couple of New Englanders and Colonials from the 1700s. “People nowadays like the updated houses with old-world vibes,” MacBride says. Other architectural styles include Cape Cods and shingle styles, with some ranch styles available. Most prices fall between $500,000 and $2 million, although some waterfront properties can cost upward of $3 million. Kittery Point receives a CAP Index Crime Score of one out of 10, compared to the national average of four out of 10.Flood insurance recommended for homeowners
The Federal Emergency Management Agency identifies several Zone VE flood hazards in the neighborhood, meaning that properties in the area have a 26% chance of flood damage over 30 years and are more likely to experience damage from storm waves. Because of this, homeowners are encouraged to purchase flood insurance, which is required for anyone with a federally backed mortgage.Events celebrating Kittery culture
The Kittery Block Party is held every June, with live music, games and vendors displaying local food and artists. The Taste of Kittery, a greater celebration of the town’s restaurants, is held in October. Attendees can purchase a ticket to try food from nearby 20 eateries, including Lil’s Cafe and Ore Nell’s Barbecue. “The nice part is that you sample all these things, and then the money goes back into the restaurants,” Perkins says. “It’s a lovely way to try the restaurants in Kittery.”Restaurants on the cove and in Kittery
Several restaurants are at Pepperrell Cove, including Bistro 1828, which only uses locally sourced ingredients, and Frisbee’s Wharf, with outdoor seating that offers views of the cove. Chauncey Creek Lobster Pier sits on the river of the same name and is open from May to October every year. It has a “Bring Your Own Bottle” policy that expands beyond beverages; if there is anything a patron wants that is not on the menu, they are encouraged to bring it. “Families make it a tradition to bring picnic blankets and set up a whole table,” MacBride says. “They make a whole night of it.” Many people also travel to Foreside for a bite, with options such as the award-winning Tulsi, farm-to-fork gastropub Black Birch and the Tributary Brewing Company, owned by master brewer Tod Mott. “We’ve just got so many amazing, fabulous restaurants now,” Perkins says. Hannaford is in Portsmouth, although fresh fruits and veggies can be found at Golden Harvest Produce Market or the Kittery Community Market, which runs on Sundays from June to November. Kittery Premium Outlets are about 4 miles away and include popular retailers such as the Nike Factory Store and American Eagle. Target, Walmart and Home Depot are all within 9 miles.Kittery schools piloting preschool program
Kittery School District serves the community, starting with Horace Mitchell Primary School, which earns an A-minus from Niche and teaches kindergarten through third grade. Fourth through eighth grade can be completed at Shapleigh School, which receives a B-plus. The B-rated Robert W. Traip Academy partners with the Sanford Regional Technical Center for career and technical education opportunities, with classes ranging from early childhood education to landscape and horticulture. The district is piloting a free preschool program for children ages four and up, which may be more widely offered in the next few years.
Short drive to Portsmouth
The neighborhood is car dependent. State Route 103 goes through Kittery Point and Foreside into Portsmouth, NH, about 4 miles away. The road also connects with U.S. Route 1 and Interstate 95. Portsmouth International Airport is about 9 miles away, and the closest emergency room is at Portsmouth Hospital, about a 6-mile drive.
