Locals want more businesses downtown
Although many residents work in Muncie and Indianapolis, about 3,000 people travel to Yorktown daily for work. The biggest industries are health care, manufacturing, education and retail.
Officials are working toward making Downtown Yorktown a hub for commerce. Residents have said they'd like a grocery or specialty food store, additional restaurants, clothing stores and recreational shops. One of the most recent additions is The Oliver, a $6 million multi-use development. "The Oliver has retail on the first floor and apartments up above it. It's full with a waiting list — they were full before they ever opened," Hurley says. "So part of the town's focus is getting more people to live downtown to get the density here so that we'll have more shops, retail and restaurants that want to open."
