Yorktown is the 'Diamond of Delaware County'
Cradled by the White River and Buck Creek, Yorktown offers a respite from the bustle of nearby Muncie. The town has a population of about 11,000, more than doubled since 2000. And over a dozen residential and three commercial subdivisions have opened in Yorktown in the past 10 years. "We're kind of a suburb of Muncie, so a lot of people work in Muncie and live in Yorktown," says Erin Hurley, assistant town manager and resident of 32 years. "We consider ourselves the 'Diamond of Delaware County.' If you live in Delaware County, you want to live in Yorktown. We've got the best schools, we've got the best streets ... We're really focused on quality of life, and we've got a great parks system."

Locals connect with nature at Morrow's Meadow and watch concerts at Civic Green Plaza
Yorktown maintains more than 100 acres of public parks and 10 miles of trails and sidewalks. Morrow's Meadow is the most popular green space in the heart of the community. The park has playgrounds, a large open field, and a paved walking trail next to the White River and Buck Creek. Locals look forward to a slate of events throughout the year. Many take place at the Civic Green Plaza, a downtown common area with a small amphitheater, a splash pad and greenspace. It's the site of Concerts on the Green, an annual summer concert series, and the seasonal Yorktown Farm and Artisan Market in the summer and early fall. The Fourth of July is another big event for the town. Locals want more businesses downtown
Although many residents work in Muncie and Indianapolis, about 3,000 people travel to Yorktown daily for work. The biggest industries are health care, manufacturing, education and retail. Officials are working toward making Downtown Yorktown a hub for commerce. Residents have said they'd like a grocery or specialty food store, additional restaurants, clothing stores and recreational shops. One of the most recent additions is The Oliver, a $6 million multi-use development. "The Oliver has retail on the first floor and apartments up above it. It's full with a waiting list — they were full before they ever opened," Hurley says. "So part of the town's focus is getting more people to live downtown to get the density here so that we'll have more shops, retail and restaurants that want to open."
