Newport
Suburban Neighborhood in Youngstown, Ohio
Mahoning County 44511
Year-round recreation
Mill Creek Park, the largest of Youngstown’s MetroParks, offers 45 miles of trails and 20 miles of drives, a big selling point of the Newport neighborhood. The park features two 18-hole championship golf courses and a large performing arts pavilion that hosts MetroParks’ annual summer concert series. At the James L. Wick Recreation Area, young athletes can practice on various state-of-the-art sports fields or skate at the hockey rink. Paved multi-use nature trails wind through rolling hills and highlight the area’s historical landmarks like the Lanterman’s Mill, a 19th-century gristmill that still operates today.High school offers AP classes
Newport is zoned for the Youngstown City school district, which has open enrollment. Students can start their education at Kirkmere Elementary and move on to Rayen Early College Middle School, both of which have a C-minus grade from Niche. East High School, also with a C-minus grade, offers Advanced Placement classes and exams.Summer concerts draws crowds
During the summer, LIVE! at the Morley is MetroParks’ annual concert series, where local bands and emerging artists perform at the pavilion in Mill Creek Park. Families from all over Youngstown crowd the Morley Pavillion lawn with blankets and folding chairs at this free outdoor event. Throughout the year, local non-profits and community volunteers lead neighborhood clean-up days to help revitalize Newport and other nearby communities.Public transportation is popular
The Western Reserve Transit Authority (WRTA) provides free bus rides throughout the area, “The bus system here is well utilized,” says Erica Avery, a Realtor with Liberty Home Service who’s lived and worked in Youngstown her entire life. South Newport is bordered by Midlothian Boulevard, and U.S. Route 62 runs along the north side of the neighborhood. A few blocks east, Market Street is the main corridor locals use to access St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital. U.S. Route 62 conveniently connects to nearby interstates that lead residents to Downtown Youngstown. Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport is an 18-mile drive via Ohio State Route 11.Homemade Pies and good soul-food
Residents can head down Market Street to find chain stores and fast-food options. Along U.S. Route 224, Giant Eagle and Target provide locals with groceries and other sundries. Youngstown’s revitalization efforts have brought a few locally owned restaurants and small businesses to the Newport neighborhood. On the corner of West Judson Avenue, Pie Oh My is a woman-owned bakery serving homemade pies and many other gourmet desserts. Savannah Joe’s is a new soul-food restaurant on Glenwood Avenue that has become a local favorite, with southern-style cuisine and a family-friendly atmosphere.Park is the central hub
Newport residents live in vintage homes near sprawling Mill Creek Park. In recent years, city officials have partnered with local non-profits to demolish abandoned houses and add new economy-boosting developments. Houses are situated on manicured lots, measuring less than ¼ acre, and streetlamps stand sentry along gridded, tree-lined streets where kids play and neighbors walk their dogs. “This is the first neighborhood in the area to have paved sidewalks and garages,” says Maureen Spear, Realtor with Nexthome Go30 Realty, who sold three homes here. “The homes are sturdy and well-built.”
