Yuma neighborhood close to schools, recreation and local dining
Sights and sounds in Mesa Heights are typically comprised of children walking to school, while excited laughter and the clicking and grinding of skating wheels emanate from Kennedy Memorial Park on the weekends. At night, several nearby restaurants are busy with patrons mingling over drinks and authentic Mexican and Southwestern fare. These are just some of the scenes in this Yuma, Arizona, neighborhood right off U.S. Highway 95 and Interstate 8. “The main thing in this small radius is there’s definitely just a lot of options for commercial businesses … groceries and everything like that,” says Justin Haile, the owner of the area’s 4th Avenue Gym. “And I guess a big one, family-wise, is the schools. There are definitely a lot of schools in this area. There’s one that’s within walking distance from the gym.”
Midcentury-era homes, privacy and solar panels
Mesa Heights’ blocks are filled with homes showing ranch-style, midcentury, bungalow and Craftsman designs. The neighborhood also has a community of manufactured homes. Fences and gates surround many properties, while several owners place solar panels on their roofs to take advantage of Yuma’s exceptional number of sunny days. This city of about 100,000 people holds the distinction of being the sunniest locality in the world. Depending on size, single-family costs can go from about $140,000 to $280,000.
Small local spots serving doughnuts, drinks and Hispanic fare
Yuma’s Donuts is a stop for breakfast and late-night snacks. Sports fans enjoy catching up on the latest sports highlights at Burgers & Beer. The chile relleno and Mexicali Burger are among the favorites at this small chain. MR Burros serves Southwestern favorites from a cozy yellow shack with a small patio. La Cocina De Lilly serves Mexican favorites, while Yumas Friendly Tavern is a late-night hangout with pool and dart games. Fry’s Food and Drug is the nearest chain grocer, but the neighborhood has more local options with the Yuma Market and Stan’s Grocery.
Kennedy Memorial Park’s unique attractions and activities
The multi-purpose Kennedy Memorial Park spans 17 acres. In addition to common amenities like its playground and basketball courts, the site’s unique attractions include horseshoe pits, a skate park and an in-line rink used by roller hockey teams of all ages. Youth soccer teams use the open fields, while the sand volleyball court often hosts pickup games. The 4th Avenue Gym operates around the clock. “You got a gym here that’s one of the only gyms in town that’s fully staffed 24 hours a day, "Haile says. "You can go to the gym at two in the morning and feel comfortable because there’s staff there at all times.”
The community involved Harvest Preparatory Academy
Schools within Mesa Heights include C.W. McGraw Elementary and Gila Vista High, which respectively get C-plus and C-minus grades from Niche. Another neighborhood school is the Harvest Preparatory Academy, which receives a C-plus from Niche. The public charter school serves students from kindergarten to 12th grade and is heavily involved in the community with activities like a food drive and neighborhood cleanup. Students may also finish their public education at Kofa High School, which gets a C-plus from Niche.
Close to Yuma County Fairgrounds
The neighborhood is a few miles from the Yuma County Fairgrounds. Every April, the site buzzes with excitement when the fair brings out the colorful and lighted carnival rides. Those in attendance can also see livestock shows and cars kick up dirt during the demolition derby. The fairgrounds neighbors the Yuma International Airport, which hosts the Yuma Airshow in March. The show features various aircraft demonstrations and even other events like wrestling.
Accessibility and proximity to I-8
The Yuma County Area Transit has several bus stops along the neighborhood. The city is also gathering input for plans to improve accessibility, an issue of importance for Mesa Heights’ disabled population. “We want ramps and elevators and we need people to be able to get into stores and navigate through life. I think it’s a very progressive thing for a small town to be doing,” says Pamela Clark, who runs a mobility scooter business in Mesa Heights. Mesa Heights is about a mile off Interstate 8 and 3 miles from Yuma’s historic downtown. Two miles south is the Yuma International Airport, where the Marine Corps keeps an airfield. The airport handles commercial services, but only American Airlines flights between Yuma, Phoenix and Dallas-Forth Worth. The Onvida Health Yuma Medical Center is the closest hospital facility.
