Stability in the Joanna neighborhood
Some of the homes built between the 1940s and ‘70s have been renovated. Split-level, raised ranches and Cape Cods are priced between $150,000 and $275,000, while duplexes and condos run from $190,000 to $250,000. Most single-family homes have three to four bedrooms and an average size of 1,100 square feet. “The prices are a factor in people's loyalty to this neighborhood,” Mendez says. “When people move here, they stay here.” Homes that are close to major roadways are more susceptible to noise. Winds off Lake Michigan combined with dry weather put homes in this neighborhood in the moderate fire risk category, according to the First Street, a climate risk analysis firm. Two phases of elementary school in the Zion Elementary School District
Public school students living in the Joanna neighborhood have two elementary schools to attend. Beulah Park Elementary rates a C-minus on Niche and teaches students through second grade. West Elementary serves third through fifth grade and is located on Jethro Avenue in the neighborhood. The school gets a D. Zion Central Middle School has a low student-teacher ratio of 11 to 1 but gets a C-minus grade. The high school is in a different district. Zion-Benton Township High School is part of the Zion-Benton High School District. The school is rated a B-minus. One of the programs at the school is called Transitions, which prepares students for life after high school, whether it’s attending college, going into the workforce or living independently. Zion-Benton Public Library is only a few miles east, close to the Shiloh Park Golf Course. The Robert McClory Bike Path passes through the neighborhood
A portion of the Robert McClory Bike Trail spans from the Wisconsin state line to the Braeside Metra station in the Highland Park area and covers Lake County. Walkers and joggers also use this path, which was once the Chicago North Shore and Milwaukee Railroad and served as a freight and passenger line in the early to mid-20th century. The trail continues into Wisconsin but changes its name to the Kenosha County Bike Trail. Joanna Park is the neighborhood recreation retreat with a couple of tennis courts, a playground, a full basketball court and plenty of open space for neighborhood games or tossing the frisbee. About a mile east is the Shiloh Park Golf Course and the 130-acre Shiloh Park, home of the community Fourth of July Festival and family events around Halloween and Christmas. Everyday amenities include two baseball diamonds and four tennis courts. A dip into Lake Michigan is less than 4 miles away at Isherwood Beach, close to the North Dunes Nature Preserve.Metra runs between Kenosha and Chicago
The Union Pacific North route of the Metra commuter train goes north to Kenosha, Wisconsin, only two stops away. Commuters heading south into downtown Chicago have about a 45-minute ride into Union Station downtown. The Pace suburban bus lines have stops around the neighborhood, including 21st and 23rd Streets and Salem Boulevard. The nearest interstate is I-94, which is about 6 miles to the west. It’s a 10-minute trip north to reach Froedtert Pleasant Prairie Hospital.Shirl’s Drive-In for sweet treats
While Joanna is mainly a residential neighborhood, there are a few places to have a meal or dessert within the boundaries. Taqueria Los Naranjos is in a small shopping center, serving traditional Mexican food in a casual atmosphere. Shirl’s Drive-In Zion is an ice cream stand with sandwiches available. West of the neighborhood on Hiawatha Pioneer Trail is a Walmart Supercenter, and on Galilee Avenue is the locally owned Salem Meats and Grocery.
