Joanna is close to the Wisconsin border
Within minutes of beaches along Lake Michigan, the Joanna neighborhood is in the Chicago suburb of Zion and 3 miles south of the Wisconsin border. “People like this neighborhood because it’s between Chicago and Milwaukee,” says Daniel Hugo Mendez, a broker with Charles Rutenberg Realty of Illinois with about seven years of experience. Keonsha is a city just north of Wisconsin's border and about 10 miles away. “There are people who live in this neighborhood who work at industrial jobs there.” One of the biggest is an Amazon Fulfillment Center that employs about 1,000 people.
Stability in the Joanna neighborhood
Some of the homes built between the 1940s and ‘70s have been renovated. Split-level, raised ranches and Cape Cods are priced between $150,000 and $275,000, while duplexes and condos run from $190,000 to $250,000. Most single-family homes have three to four bedrooms and an average size of 1,100 square feet. “The prices are a factor in people's loyalty to this neighborhood,” Mendez says. “When people move here, they stay here.” Homes that are close to major roadways are more susceptible to noise. Winds off Lake Michigan combined with dry weather put homes in this neighborhood in the moderate fire risk category, according to the First Street, a climate risk analysis firm.

The Robert McClory Bike Path passes through the neighborhood
A portion of the Robert McClory Bike Trail spans from the Wisconsin state line to the Braeside Metra station in the Highland Park area and covers Lake County. Walkers and joggers also use this path, which was once the Chicago North Shore and Milwaukee Railroad and served as a freight and passenger line in the early to mid-20th century. The trail continues into Wisconsin but changes its name to the Kenosha County Bike Trail. Joanna Park is the neighborhood recreation retreat with a couple of tennis courts, a playground, a full basketball court and plenty of open space for neighborhood games or tossing the frisbee. About a mile east is the Shiloh Park Golf Course and the 130-acre Shiloh Park, home of the community Fourth of July Festival and family events around Halloween and Christmas. Everyday amenities include two baseball diamonds and four tennis courts. A dip into Lake Michigan is less than 4 miles away at Isherwood Beach, close to the North Dunes Nature Preserve.
