"It's a small community. It's very friendly. But it's a much different lifestyle than if you live down by the coast," says Realtor Katie Keeler of Exp Realty, a longtime Santa Cruz County resident. "You're going to need a chainsaw and a generator." The neighborhood may be difficult to reach, but it’s only 7 miles from shopping and grocery stores in Scotts Valley. Hiking through the redwoods
Surrounded by dense forests and steep hillsides, Zayante is a paradise for nature lovers. Big Basin Redwoods State Park, California’s oldest state park, is just a short drive away. It's known for its rugged hiking trails, redwood groves and unspoiled mountain vistas. The park was severely damaged by a wildfire in 2020 that impacted around 97% of its 18,000 acres, but new plant life is blooming at a rapid pace. Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park is south of Zayante and features long hikes through stunning redwood forests, beautiful wildlife and pristine swimming holes. In Zayante, residents wake up to the sound of birds chirping, squirrels darting across tree branches and the rustling of leaves on a windy day. Eclectic midcentury homes and cabins are tucked away in dense, forest scenery on large lots, some of which stretch for more than 10 acres. Living in this area can pose unique challenges, however, including longer power, sewer and water outages. But the tradeoff is remote, mountain living with plenty of privacy. Getting around Santa Cruz County
Commuters heading to San Jose can travel on Zayante Road, which eventually connects with Bear Creek Road and then State Route 17. San Jose is about 25 miles away, but the drive can take upwards of 45 minutes because traveling on winding, country roads can be slow-going. Santa Cruz beaches and shopping are about 10 miles south. Residents will need a car to get around because the area is not served by Santa Cruz Metro bus lines. The nearest hospital is Dominican Hospital, about 12 miles south in Santa Cruz.

Risk of wildfires
Zayante is at risk for wildfires, which have become more frequent along the California coast as global temperatures have risen. In 2020, the CZU Lightning Complex Fire destroyed more than 900 homes in the area near Big Basin State Park. Heavy rains during the winter also pose risks for residents. The high volume of rainfall can cause road closures, power outages and can damage water systems and septic tanks.
