The story of the Mather Airport neighborhood begins in 1918 when the U.S. Army started recruiting cadets to join a new flying school east of Sacramento. The area earned its namesake after fallen pilot and Second Lieutenant Carl Spencer Mather. The former military hospital has been converted into a VA outpatient center, which serves over 1,300 veterans every year and is the neighborhood’s largest employer.
