Quiet LA suburb just south of Downtown
Named for May Wood, a popular local office worker at the dawn of the 20th century, the City of Maywood is a small suburb located just a few miles south of Downtown LA. Throughout the city, locals enjoy easy access to ample shopping and dining options, along with the extensive LA River Bikeway. “In a way, there’s not much to say about Maywood, but I think for a lot of people, that’s the appeal,” says local Realtor Fabian Garcia, who has worked in the area for over a decade. “You’re close to East LA, South LA, Downtown. It’s pretty easy to get around, at least when there’s no traffic. But the area itself is fairly quiet, which is definitely a plus for most residents.”

Turn-of-the-century homes
Most homes in the area were built in the early 1900s as well. Along Maywood’s streets, you’ll find hundreds of modest ranches and bungalows in a variety of styles—mostly Spanish revival and Craftsman—along with a few low-rise multi-family properties. The median price of a single-family home in the community is just a hair over $600,000, while the average home size in Maywood is around 1,150 square feet.

Maywood Center for Enriched Studies
Maywood’s schools are part of the LA Unified School District. Loma Vista Elementary has a 6-out-of-10 rating on GreatSchools, while Chester W. Nimitz Middle School has a C-plus grade on Niche. Local magnet Maywood Center for Enriched Studies has an A-minus grade on Niche and makes a point of tailoring individual curricula to align with student interests.

LA River Bikeway and local YMCA
Locals looking to stay active can head to the local YMCA, which has exercise equipment, classes for adults and kids, and a swimming pool, or they can go to the east side of town and hop on the LA River Bike trail, which stretches all the way down to Long Beach If you’re just trying to have a little fun, Gage Bowl has pool, karaoke, and bowling leagues for all levels. Slauson Avenue Shopping
Shopping in the city centers around Slauson Avenue, where you’ll find major grocers like Superior and Food4Less, along with local stores and shopping centers. The street is also home to most of Maywood’s restaurants. If you’ve got a sweet tooth, stop by Guatemalteca Bakery and Restaurant for a pastry and an atol de elote, or sweet corn drink. In the mood for something more substantial? Swing by Fiesta del Mar and try the much-loved marlin tacos or shrimp empanadas.

Alameda Swap Meet and the Casinos
While there aren’t a whole lot of local events in Maywood, there are a ton of entertainment options just outside the city limits. Head west, and you’ll find the Alameda Swap Meet, an enormous agglomeration of vendors selling curios, traditional Latin crafts and clothing, and street food. Head east, and there are Parkwest Bicycle and Commerce Casinos, which host major musical acts and other live events. And, of course, Downtown LA is just a fifteen-minute drive north.

Interstates 710 and 5
While there is bus service in Maywood, connecting it with surrounding cities and Downtown LA, navigating the routes and timetables can require some careful scheduling. Most locals own their own transportation and rely on nearby Interstates 710 and 5 to get around LA.
