A subdivision in the heart of Metairie
Metairie has come a long way since the French settled it in the 1720s. Formerly a swamp, Metairie has blossomed into a bustling region filled with businesses, restaurants and shopping options in Jefferson Parish. North Bridgedale sits in the heart of the community, serving as a top subdivision in the parish just 11 miles from Bourbon Street. Sandwiched between Lake Pontchartrain and the Mississippi River, North Bridgedale is a laid-back residential area with access to major roads, schools and houses of worship.
North Bridgedale has ranch-style homes and townhouses
Trees dot the perimeter of the neighborhood’s sidewalk-lined streets and trimmed front lawns bolster the community’s curb appeal. Some houses have attached one-car garages, but street parking is also common. Homes vary widely in size and price. Brick ranch-style homes are abundant, though cottages, Cape Cod and Acadian-style properties stand out as well. Homes in need of updates like new flooring, paint and appliances can cost between $150,000 and $250,000. Move-in ready homes generally range from $250,000 to $550,000. Renovated homes tend to fetch a higher price. The area’s most expensive homes are often new builds or older, custom-built homes that have been extensively renovated. These homes often cost between $700,000 and $1.4 million. Townhouses cost between $200,000 and $450,000, and their price increases based on renovations and the building’s age.
Metairie's Catholic roots are strong in North Bridgedale
North Bridgedale is a highly inclusive community, but many residents connect through the Catholic religion. "When you talk to somebody from Metairie and you ask them where they live, most people will tell you which church parish they live in. Like, 'I live in St. Mary Magdalen parish,' or 'I live in St. Catherine parish,'" says Charlene Hale, a lifelong Metairie resident and Director of Partnerships & Travel Media for Visit Jefferson Parish. "A lot of things are based on the Catholic religion because it's a really huge part of our culture." Metairie has more than just Catholic parishes, though. The area is home to a variety of Protestant churches, synagogues and masjids like The Islamic Message Foundation Center, which is just off of Metairie Avenue.
Bon Temps Boulet's Seafood is a seasonal favorite
Seafood is much more than just a tasty meal in Metairie. It's also a way of life. "I like to tell people our area is not your frozen fish stick area," Hale says. "Because of our proximity to water, fresh seafood is a huge part of our culture — what we eat and how most people make their living based on food. The restaurant industry is huge here." Bon Temps Boulet's Seafood is the seafood spot of choice. Locals go crazy for the eatery's fresh crawfish and crab, available from January to June. Short Stop Poboys is another neighborhood favorite, known for its gumbo and wide selection of sandwiches. Diners at That’s Amore Pizzeria know that good things come to those who wait. Specializing in Chicago- and New York-style pies, patrons can expect a 45-minute wait while their deep-dish pizza is prepared. Rouses Market has groceries covered. Elmwood Shopping Center has big box stores, retail shops and restaurants, plus a movie theater and Adventure Quest Laser Tag. Even more shopping can be found at Clearview City Center.
Play ball at Mike Miley Playground and Stadium
Just a mile west of the neighborhood is Lafreniere Park — a 155-acre hub with soccer fields, vibrant gardens and a large pond that attracts bird-watchers from across town to catch a glimpse of swans, ibis and various other species. Mike Miley Playground is one of the largest parks in the area and a favorite among families thanks to its two playgrounds, sports fields and Mike Miley Stadium, which hosts high school baseball games. Residents are just north of the Ochsner Sports Performance Center — the practice facility for the New Orleans Saints and the Pelicans.
CTE programs at East Jefferson High
Most students are zoned for Rudolph Matas School, a pre-K through Grade 8 school that earns a B-plus from Niche. East Jefferson High School receives a C and offers career and technical education programs. Students can choose from health sciences, micro-enterprise and business computer applications, which focuses on Microsoft Office products. There are also private school options nearby, including A-rated St. Martin’s Episcopal School.
Interstate 10 connects to Bourbon Street
Locals are largely car-dependent and have solid access to major roads and highways. Clearview Parkway and Metairie Avenue both cut directly through the community, while Interstate 10 runs less than a mile to the north. Bourbon Street is less than 11 miles away via I-10. Locals are also 7 miles away from Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport. Lakeside Hospital is a few miles north. Since the neighborhood is situated between Lake Pontchartrain and the Mississippi River, flooding is a potential risk.
Year-round events in Metairie
More than 10 million LED lights shine bright during Christmas in Lafreniere Park, which is held the whole month of December. Drivers pay a fee to cruise past brilliant displays and recurring characters like a 60-foot sea serpent in a lagoon and a princess in a castle. North Bridgedale has become a destination for trick-or-treaters on Halloween. Neighbors are known for going all-out with themed displays that change from year to year.
