A Hialeah neighborhood for foodies

Hialeah Acres is the heart of Hialeah, a predominantly residential city just north of Miami. The urban neighborhood is full of South Florida charm, from fruit trees in front yards to vintage Spanish Revival homes. “It’s the location and the culture of the area that draws people,” says local Moises Saca, a broker with Best American Realty. “You have all these restaurants in the neighborhood, and you're close to downtown Miami and the airport.” Locally owned restaurants serving classic Latin fare and seafood are never too far away in Hialeah Acres. Schools, parks, public transportation and main roads like Interstate 95 are nearby, too.

Spanish Revival cottages and condos

Many of the neighborhood’s densely set cottages and ranch-style homes were built in the 1940s and '50s. Typical of the Florida vernacular, they display the hallmarks of Spanish Revival architecture, complete with stucco siding and terracotta barrel roof tiles. While the cottages are more compact, typically offering two or three bedrooms, the ranches are roomier, some offering four or five bedrooms. Properties in need of updates range from the mid $200,000s to about $500,000. Newly renovated, move-in-ready houses cost between $500,000 and $800,000. This price range includes the neighborhood’s smattering of newly built homes. Hialeah Acres also features condos, and many are in historic Spanish Revival low-rises. Condo prices range from about $200,000 to the low $300,000s. Outside of the condominiums, the community doesn't have HOAs.

Miami Springs Senior High

Miami-Dade County Public Schools serves Hialeah. Lorah Park Elementary is graded C-plus on Niche, Miami Springs Middle is graded C and Miami Springs Senior High earns a B. The high school offers several career academies, making it a magnet for students interested in aerospace, technology and more. Miami Springs Senior High also offers the Cambridge Advanced International Certificate of Education program, which graduates students with an advanced, internationally recognized diploma and up to 30 college credit hours for each AICE exam passed.

Maruchi and other local spots

According to Saca, Hialeah Acres offers quite a lineup of local restaurants. “It’s a multiethnic area; you can find any kind of food you like there,” he says. The neighborhood has several Cuban spots, including Maruchi, popular for hearty portions and authentic flavor. Up the road, La Carne Asada serves traditional Nicaraguan fare. Heads Or Tails Seafood Fish Market & Restaurant is known for ceviche appetizers and fresh fish entrees. As for day-to-day shopping or grabbing a bite, Hialeah Drive is lined by stores like Publix and fast-food chains like Wendy’s.

Hialeah Park Casino

Hialeah Park Casino is a historic hub for entertainment just north of Hialeah Acres. In the 1930s, after suffering damages from the Great Hurricane in 1925, the casino was redesigned to impress, using bold elements from European architecture. The casino floor was inspired by a casino the developer and architect visited together in Monte-Carlo, while the grand staircases emulated those they saw in Deauville and Ascot. During its heyday in the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s, various presidents, celebrities and foreign diplomats would swing by when wintering in Miami. The casino became the forefront of Hialeah Park when it stopped hosting horse races in 2001. Today, Saca says, “people who don’t live in the area will head to Hard Rock [Casino] for a visit. Hialeah Park Casino is always busy, but it’s more a local crowd.” The casino offers more than 850 slot machines, a lively poker room, six restaurants and, of course, big screens to broadcast the latest horse races.

Cuban Culture in Exile Heritage Park and other local green spaces

Cuban Culture in Exile Heritage Park is a scenic space on the corner of Hialeah Drive and Northeast 9th Avenue. It memorializes figures who fought for Cuban freedom and celebrates the many exiles who found new homes in Hialeah. Nearby, Babcock Park has a popular community pool that holds swim lessons every summer and various athletic facilities, including seven ballfields, two tennis courts and two basketball courts. It also has a playground for kids. On the neighborhood’s east side, Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park features two basketball courts, two tennis courts and two racquetball courts. Mature oaks shade the playground and walking trails.

“Traffic is everywhere in Miami”

“Traffic is everywhere in Miami — you can’t escape — and Hialeah is no different,” Saca says with a laugh. Public transportation is a popular choice in Hialeah Acres. Miami-Dade County Metrobus stops are all around the neighborhood on busier roads like Northwest 62nd Street. Okeechobee Metrorail Station is just outside the neighborhood, with routes connecting to Miami International Airport, 3 miles away, and Downtown Miami, just under 10 miles away. Hialeah Hospital is less than a mile outside the neighborhood, and Interstate 95 is 5 miles away.
