Sunkist Grove Community Center
The Sunkist Grove Community Center is at the center of the neighborhood where 125th Street and 13th Avenue meet at the diamond-shaped intersection. “The center has a tutorial program for after-school help. It gives kids a place to go after school,” says Judy Brown, a resident of the Sunkist Grove neighborhood for 40 years and president of the neighborhood association. Computer labs can be used inside, and there’s a multi-purpose serving kitchen and an attached food pantry. The NoMi Food Pantry is run by the North Miami Housing and Social Services Department and was placed there because North Miami has one of the highest poverty rates in Miami-Dade County. People who need the services of the food pantry must meet specific requirements. “The food bank is active twice a month for people who need that service,” Brown says.

Most of Sunkist Grove’s parks are within the diamond intersection
There are similar diamond-shaped intersections throughout Sunkist Grove, where recreational opportunities can often be found. Thomas Sasso Pool and Water Playground has open swimming on Saturday and Sunday, and lap swimming and swim lessons are available Tuesday through Friday. The pool also has a water playground for small children. The Clyde Judson Community Center is at the edge of Kiwanis Park and is also home to a community garden and a shaded playground. The center can be rented out for meetings or community events. Oleander Park is primarily green space, but there is a backstop where a baseball or softball game can happen. There’s also a playground and a full basketball court behind the Sunkist Grove Community Center. While not part of a diamond intersection, Ben Franklin Park has outdoor exercise equipment, basketball courts and more than enough space for a soccer or football game. Claude Pepper Park is the largest, with a walking trail and multiple tennis and basketball courts.

Miami-Dade is the third-largest school district in the country
The nearby schools are part of the Miami-Dade County Public School District, the third largest in the country with over 356,000 students. Mostly, it’s a safe place for kids to come and do arts and crafts, have a snack or get a little extra help with schoolwork from tutors.” The kids are funneled from many schools, including the Benjamin Franklin K-8 Center and Miami Central Senior High School.
