Agricultural but highway accessible
With some farmland now being used for more houses and businesses, Westfield is a growing neighborhood in Middletown, Connecticut. "It’s always been a little bit more city," says Linda O'Hara, a real estate agent with William Raveis Real Estate and Middletown resident, "It's a hop, skip and a jump from the Berlin Turnpike, which gives access to New Haven." Despite its proximity to the city, Westfield still maintains plenty of forest land. Rabbits, owls and snakes are just some of the wildlife inhabiting the woods. The balance of metropolitan and agriculture makes this neighborhood popular with families and commuters.
Colonial house are common in Westfield,CT.
Houses ranging in price and style
Homes in Westfield may sit on large lots, often in cul-de-sacs that are surrounded by large trees blocking the view of the house next door. Nearer to the highway, houses are closer together in subdivisions where colonials and ranch styles are common. Housing prices tend to be less expensive than in surrounding areas. Fixer-uppers can go for as low as $150,000 while newer builds tend to sell for around $470,000. Condos sell from around $125,000 to $225,000 with amenities like tennis courts and an outdoor pool.
The Athenian Diner is a very poplular plac for dining any time of day.
Streets that are worth shopping
Residents can pick up their groceries at Price Chopper or Aldi on Washington Street. On the same road, which intersects with the Coginchaug River, there are restaurants such as Five Guys and Athenian Diner II. Middletown’s Main Street is about 1.5 miles up the road. Close to Wesleyan University, it has a popular nightlife scene with bars such as Conspiracy. There are nearly 200 independent shops, including a Pocketful of Posies — selling clothing, accessories and handmade decorations.
Planting seeds of knowledge
For elementary education, Westfield’s Moody School receives a B-plus rating on Niche while Beman Middle (formerly Woodrow Wilson Middle) is rated a C-plus. Middletown High School has an agricultural program that teaches animal science, aquaculture and agricultural business. "All the students in surrounding towns will come to Middletown High because it's the only program like that in Middlesex County," O’Hara says. The school receives a B rating on Niche.
Smith Park is a beautiful spot to enjoy the greenery of gorgeous Connecticut.
Exploring and enjoying nature
Smith Memorial Park has ballfields, hiking trails and a wetland meadow and pond. In 2023, the city announced plans to replace the deteriorating playground equipment. With no playground at all, Tynan Memorial Park provides a quiet, reflective place to hike and enjoy nature throughout the changing seasons. There is a monument honoring Major Stephen Tynan, a local World War II Medal of Honor recipient.
Events in the sun and snow
Every first Friday of the summer months, Middletown Arts Fest brings the arts to Main Street. There is more seasonal fun in December with Magic of Middletown. All month long the city celebrates Christmas with events such as a holiday music festival and car parade.
Highway access to New England cities
Interstate 91 runs through Westfield making cities like Hartford and New Haven an easy trip. The amount of land makes having a car necessary to get around. Some streets near the highway are serviced by the Middletown Area Transit. The bus system provides transit to the City of Middletown and the greater Middletown region.
Important to know
Important to know: Middletown declared a state of climate emergency in 2020. They aim to end city-generated greenhouse gas emissions by or before December 31, 2030, and to adopt techniques to safely reduce emitted carbon.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
