Capitol Heights comprises dozens of dense, gridded blocks and a large commercial section on Milwaukee’s Northwest Side. More than 5,500 people live in its many early-to-mid-20th century homes, most of which back up to rear alleys with detached garages, sheds and extra parking spaces. House designs here include many unique spins on the Tudor architectural tradition, some with the classic brick-and-stone facades, others with vinyl siding and dormers. Simple ranch-style and Cape Cod homes with linear floor plans are also common here, while midcentury Colonials and older bungalows appear occasionally. Price tags peak around the mid-$200,000s, which will get you a nicely remodeled, three-bedroom, roughly 1,400-square-foot home. Milwaukee Marshall High School anchors the neighborhood, its central location within convenient walking distance of many of its 860-plus students. Marshall Eagles can enroll in dual enrollment courses via four NAF career pathways, potentially earning college credit in subjects from health sciences to graphic design. The charter school Milwaukee Environmental Sciences Academy is also conveniently located, teaching kindergarten through eighth grade students to be responsible stewards of the world around them. And while downtown isn’t exactly within blocks of Capitol Heights, it’s hardly an inconvenient commute for workers, as Fond du Lac Avenue will get you there in roughly 15 minutes.

From disc golf to chair yoga, recreation options are plentiful
Sidewalks line all residential streets in Capitol Heights, making it easy for residents (particularly in the southern part of the neighborhood) to cross Capitol Drive to Dineen Park. At 64 acres, this is one of the largest multipurpose green spaces in the far Northwest Side. Virtually every kind of outdoorsperson can find a way to kill the time here, whether it’s with a stroll around the pond, a pickup game of basketball, baseball or tennis, or some goof-around time on the splash pad. Particularly noteworthy is the 18-hole disc golf course, the only one in the county parks system that’s open all year. Meanwhile, residents living in the more northern sections of Capitol Heights are closer to the 10-acre Indigenous Peoples’ Park, which features three Little League diamonds and a splash pad of its own. And if you’d rather get active in an indoor setting, the Capitol Branch of the Milwaukee Public Library hosts chair yoga classes most Wednesdays.

Local favorites and national chains line Capitol Drive
Feeling like a sweet treat after yoga class? Head just a few blocks east to Kitt’s Frozen Custard. This Milwaukee staple has served cones, shakes, sundaes and more beneath its signature neon sign for over 70 years. “They’re known for their custard because it’s actually real — not just fake ice cream. And the burgers are to die for,” says realtor Jessica Johnson. A bit further down Capitol Drive, Dale’s of Milwaukee also offers classic American menu items in addition to a full bar. (But let’s be real: Patrons really come here for the sheer shock of how many paintings and photos of clowns adorn the walls. Coulrophobes beware.) And just a few more blocks down Capitol is Midtown Center, a large shopping area where you can dig into meals from big-name eateries, grab groceries from Pick N Save and pop into a collection of jewelry, beauty, clothing and shoe stores.
