It might be one of the most populous neighborhoods on Milwaukee’s Northwest Side, but in Amani, life is anything but impersonal. After the collapse of the local industrial economy in the 1980s, residents were left to pick up the pieces of their fractured community. Today, it’s clear why the neighborhood was named after the Swahili word for “Peace.” Amani’s many sidewalks are lined with organizations, gathering spots and houses of worship serving roughly 6,500 residents. From daycare to free meals, family guidance and a medical clinic, devoted locals continue to rewrite the narrative of this humble Milwaukee community.

Amani’s colorful, historic bungalows
Amani spans across a handful of gridded blocks on either side of Fond du Lac Avenue, one of Milwaukee’s major commuter arteries. Largely a renter community, some locals dwell in single-family homes—like turn-of-the-century bungalows with simple, wood-framed structures—while others live in older, three-story duplexes. Most properties flaunt Colonial Revival characteristics, each somehow unique in their own ornamentation. From fanciful colors to the occasional second-floor balcony or spacious front porch, these homes often have a decent amount of yard extending down to wide sidewalks. Prices range from as low as $20,000 for investment properties and fixer-uppers, to $150,000 for renovated homes.

Locally-grown produce and locally-owned eateries
Locally grown produce overflows at Fondy Market, one of the largest and most popular farmers markets in the city. Over a century after its inception, the Fondy Market continues to offer farm-to-table goods and the work of local artists. Amani’s locally-owned eateries showcase a variety of cuisines, too. Sweet Black Coffee pays homage to the neighborhood’s African American community, with Afrocentric décor setting the mood to enjoy a hot cup of coffee or a steaming plate of soul food. Just north of Moody Park, Pizza House, a walk-up-only pizzeria where guests choose from a list of specialty pies, create their own or simply grab a burger. For the essentials, locals can hit up a nearby bodega or head to Save A Lot, located across Fond du Lac Avenue.

A STEAM curriculum at Milwaukee Public Schools
Many residents live within walking distance of Gwen T. Jackson Early Childhood and Elementary School, part of the Milwaukee Public School District with a C-minus on Niche. Enrolled students begin with all-day kindergarten and work their way up to fifth grade, by which time they’ll have been introduced to various STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) subjects. From there, students migrate to Clarke Street School, accommodating kindergarten through eighth grade and earning the same Niche score. Washington High School of Information Technology earns a D-plus on Niche and is one of the oldest schools in the city.

Pocket parks with community initiatives
Several pocket parks pop up around the community, including the Amani Community Orchard and Carter Park, both featuring artworks centered around neighborhood pride. Residents’ primary outdoor escape is Moody Park, a 4-acre, recently renovated plot featuring three colorfully painted basketball courts, a baseball practice diamond, an open playfield and a splash pad. Moody Park also has a community garden sponsored by The SEED Initiative, which encourages Milwaukeeans to plant, grow and harvest their own fresh foods.

Heading into Milwaukee
Commuting into Downtown Milwaukee means taking Route 140, Fond du Lac Avenue, about 4 miles southeast. But many residents of Amani opt for the bus instead. “The community is situated along the bus line, and close to the highway,” says Sales Associate Brittney Blackmon of Coldwell Banker Realty. “You’re downtown in less than 15 minutes.” Shafi Medical Center is along the way, walkable from many homes. Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport, however, is about 10 miles south. Thankfully, the Milwaukee County Transit System offers bus stops throughout the neighborhood, stretching across the city and south to the airport. Because of this, car dependency is optional.
Public transportation is easy to find in Amani, with bus service from MCTS.
Amani is a close-knit community outside of downtown Milwaukee.
