Upscale Mount Pleasant community built with nature in mind
Oyster Point is an upscale Mount Pleasant community with some of the best amenities in town. Buyers come for the abundance of new builds and stay for the resort-style pool, pickleball courts, and Fort Palmetto walking trails. The neighborhood opened in 2013 and development wrapped up in 2020, so most homes here aren’t more than a decade old. Positioned in the middle of Charleston’s coastal suburbia, Oyster Point is as close to the sandy shoreline as it is to the area’s biggest shopping destinations, an attractive quality for those who are looking to have it all. “It’s the perfect balance of nature and city,” says Melissa Loy, Realtor at Carolina One Real Estate, a 10-year Oyster Point seller and resident since 2016.

Oyster-shucking at the pool pavilion
Quality time is well spent at Brigade Hall, the neighborhood clubhouse that serves the heart of the community. There, neighbors gather for movie nights in front of the big screen and cocktail hours by the outdoor fireplace. From the clubhouse, visitors can walk out onto the playground to let the kids blow off steam or take a dip in the pool during Charleston’s hot summer months. “We spend a lot of time at the pavilion and host events there often. We have really big oyster shucking tables for roasts when they’re in season,” Loy says. “We also just started a community swim team.” Loy says the neighborhood stays connected, and most residents know each other. “Both my kids have made amazing friendships here.”

Meet the neighbors at the community dock
When they’re not lounging by the pool, Oyster Pointers enjoy the views of Hamlin Sound from the comfort of the community dock. Fort Palmetto Park’s woodsy trails extend from the east side, many strewn with the shells of the community’s namesake. Primarily a preservation area, local organizations work to protect the integrity of the inland waterways and the wildlife living among the marshlands. “There's a huge variety of wildlife in the ponds – flounder, birds, alligators. They did an excellent job of maintaining the natural canopy and landscape. There are many live oaks throughout the community,” Loy says. Two of the city’s best beaches – Isle of Palms and Sullivan’s Island – are also minutes away.

Traditional Charleston architecture with modern amenities and yard space
This planned development of 500 residences includes townhouses, low-slung patio properties and spacious marsh-front styles. Sidewalks run parallel to each curved street, dotted with flouncy palms. The architectural motif is uniform throughout, nodding to design elements of the Charleston Single – shuttered windows, two-level porches and pastel paint jobs. Oyster Point’s largest homes have elaborate stairway entries and room to relax outdoors. “We actually have backyards here. In so many Mount Pleasant communities, the developers have put houses right on top of each other. Here, even if you back up to another house, you can fence in the yard and install a pool,” Loy says. Prices start around $650,000, which can buy a townhouse and reach $1.5 million for a single-family style. Oyster Point homeowners also pay a one-time $275 HOA transfer fee and an annual $1,750 contribution for area maintenance.

Walk to the Shoppes at Seaside Farms
Mount Pleasant Towne Centre and the Shoppes at Seaside Farms are nearby for weekly errand runs. Loy says it's common for Oyster Point locals to walk over to pick up groceries or sit down for a bite to eat. Harris Teeter is the closest stop when locals need to restock the pantry. Independently owned restaurants like Opal, an Italian restaurant, French bakery Saveurs du Monde Café, and Crafty Draught, a dog-friendly taproom are also a short walk or ride away. For more culture and nightlife, downtown Charleston is a 10-mile ride away.

Developers take flooding precautions
While it’s important to be mindful of flood zones in coastal towns like Mount Pleasant, Oyster Point developers took great care to protect these properties from potential storms. “We just saw 24 inches in 2 days, and we had no flooding around here because of how the houses are built. … They’ve also done a great job with the retention ponds – they’re waterway captures that take care of the runoff,” Loy says. Summers in Charleston can also get hot, so pool access is helpful when the temps start to climb.
Highway 17 offers direct route downtown
“We have a lot of medical professionals and attorneys in the neighborhood. My husband is a nurse and needed to be close to the medical centers downtown – it’s part of the reason we chose this community,” Loy says. Downtown Charleston is 10 miles away, and Oyster Point locals can hop on Highway 17 for a direct route into the city. “There's not too much we can’t access within 5 to 10 minutes,” Loy says. Most homeowners drive anytime they need to leave the neighborhood. The Charleston International Airport is less than 20 miles away for longer trips.
