Traversing the Prairie and other Naperville Park District gems
This region takes pride in its natural environment, with residents helping to maintain the integrity of its green spaces. According to the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County, residents had an important role in keeping the preserve the vast and open landscape it is, as it was once slated to become a lake with a beach area. 1,800 acres of woodlands, grasslands and aquatic habitats are a favored spot for hiking, biking, picnicking and nature watching, as the preserve is home to thousands of wildlife species including woodcocks and sparrows. During the summer, the wildflowers and blossoming bushes are in full view and pups run rampant in designated areas for off-leash play. Also on the grounds is the Springbrook Golf Course, an 18-hole championship run with lush foliage opportunities for all experience levels. As for other sports facilities, skating and playground fun, Frontier Park is conveniently located on 95th Street. From Springbrook Crossing to Breckenridge Estates
Homeowner hopefuls find a blend of mid-size homes on single lots and stately homes with large parcels in the south Naperville area beneath the nature preserve. Thanks to the city’s continual development, level communities built in the 1980s like Cedar Glen, Springbrook Crossing and Mission Oaks often sit just streets away from subdivisions still expanding and adding their finishing touches. The former contain colonial-style and split-level homes priced between $450,000 and $750,000. New construction homes join stately, late-1990s New Traditionals in clubhouse communities like the Breckenridge Estates. Residents of this large subdivision enjoy a community pool with a resident swim team, tennis courts , and clubhouse rentals alongside finishing touches to their homes like three-car garages and full basements. Home prices start around $750,000 for an older, yet well-maintained property to $1.1 million for a Hudson floor plan still smelling of new paint. All roads lead to Neuqua Valley High
Kids walk each morning to one of several neighborhood elementary schools, all falling under Indian Prairie School District 204. Welch Elementary School receives an A rating from Niche, while Robert Clow Elementary School and Spring Brook Elementary School each score an A-plus. After graduating fifth grade, students feed into centrally-located Gordon Gregory Middle School before capping out under the instantly-recognizable bell tower at Neuqua Valley High School. The home of the Wildcats was the first high school in Naperville to earn the National Blue Ribbon Award and has also been ranked in US News & World Report’s top 20 best high schools in Illinois. From Route 59 to downtown Chicago
With Route 59 running north to south near the nature preserve and surrounding communities, the path to nearby cities like Aurora is clear-cut for prairie-side residents. Besides its role as a major commercial thoroughfare, Route 59 is also a straight shot to its namesake Metra station, where BNSF trains run throughout the day and evening to Chicago Union Station. Residents are 6 miles from the station, give or take, and fill the commuter parking lot each morning for the hour-long ride downtown. They travel through the prairie on Plainfield-Naperville Road to reach downtown Naperville, though this isn’t the only hotspot for residents. “They’re close to downtown Naperville, but also downtown Plainfield, which folks love,” Christian says. “And the other place nearby is Bolingbrook, which has a big mall and a movie theater.” These two cities are also accessible from Plainfield-Naperville Road and are 8 and 9 miles away, respectively. For longer journeys, the community is just under 30 miles from both Chicago O’hare International Airport and Chicago Midway International Airport.Route 59’s eateries and big-box shopping
Route 59 and 95th street intersect at this region’s southwest corner, giving way to convenient shopping. Grocers include Amazon Fresh and Jewel-Osco, which sit alongside chain fare from Dunkin to MOD Pizza. The region also has an eclectic mix of dining options. An immersive French culinary experience awaits at Paris Bistro, which serves savory and sweet crepes and signature French cocktails in a spacious setting with red and yellow booths. Houlihan’s is a favored go-to spot for American eats like steaks and burgers along with a stocked bar serving craft beers. To stay a little closer to home without sacrificing taste, Traverso’s on Plainfield-Naperville Road is an elegant family-owned Italian restaurant with intimate lighting and classy décor. Folks may also grab a bite to eat in downtown Naperville before hitting the River Walk or visit orbiting cities for wider options. Christian cites Sovereign and Mojos as popular bites in Plainfield, while the Promenade Bolingbrook offers open-air shopping at flagship stores like Barnes & Noble and classic chain dining like Bar Louie.
Celebrating Naperville community on a close-knit and wide scale
Each community’s homeowners association provides their own range of events, and annual fundraisers at local golf clubs are commonplace. The entire Naperville community comes together several times a year as well. “We have The Last Fling in Naperville, which is the end of summer festival, the ‘big event,’” Christian says. “The Naper Settlement is awesome because it’s like an old version of what Naperville was, with the old post office. The kids in elementary go on field trips there to learn about it, and they also have food trucks, wine tastings, all sorts of things.”
