Little Woods is a family-oriented area of New Orleans on the shores of Lake Pontchartrain. Also called Edgelake, the community is one of the only chances in the city to own property — and get the views — on the lakefront. Though not well known today, the neighborhood once played host to dozens of jazz legends before they were famous. Little Woods has an interesting history. It has morphed from a fishing camp to a vacation getaway spot to a densely populated suburb within the last 100 years.

First developed in the late 1800s, the five-mile-long area today known as Little Woods began the transition from rural outpost to semi-rural community in the 1920s. Fishing camps, or wooden buildings on stilts that sat in the tidal waters of Lake Pontchartrain, formed in 1926. Since people didn’t have to pay rent on them, they became quite popular as a quick getaway from the streets of New Orleans.

Little Woods’ popularity continued to grow, and it soon became a vacation destination from the city. One of the ways the locals could keep tourists entertained was with music, and several clubs sprang up to fill the need. Early jazz and ragtime bands played those clubs, so dozens of early musicians who went on to national fame began their careers in Little Woods. In fact, in Louis Armstrong’s autobiography, he directly named Little Woods as the place where he became a band leader at 13 years old.

Today, the neighborhood is one of New Orleans' best-kept secrets. It offers the conveniences of the suburbs along with the semi-rural feel that lakefront property can bring. While the last of the fishing camps were destroyed by Hurricane Georges in 1998, the views of Lake Pontchartrain are still incredible.

We experience frequent rain and thunderstorms mostly due to the fact that we are a subtropical climate. Hurricanes and tropical storms don't occur every year but they are frequent. For the rest of the time we have sunny and humid days.

Little Woods is filled with an abundance of people willing to protect and love one another, but the neighborhood isn't always the safest. Gunshots can often be heard at night, cars are constantly being broken into, and in the far distance you can always count on hearing a siren or two. Despite that, I can trust my neighbors will always have my back.

Pros: I love that we are minutes from Lake view , Chalmette and Slidell where all the shopping is. It's peaceful, quiet and have lovely homes throughout the neighborhoods. Will be even better when it comes back full pace. Cons: Since Katrina, the city has not helped to develop Little Woods back to how the suburb was to its rich economic value.
