From bayou to suburb, Plum Orchard has deep local roots
Plum Orchard is one of the oldest neighborhoods in New Orleans East. It was originally cypress swampland – part of the Bayou Sauvage – before it was developed in the 1940s when the Plum Orchard subdivision opened and steadily filled in with single- and double-family homes. The neighborhood is unique in that the largest tract of land belongs to the Sisters of the Holy Family, an order created in 1841 and which moved to the East in 1965.
All the streets in the Plum Orchard neighborhood have sidewalks for residents to walk on.
Only a few Plum Orchard homes sit on cul-de-sacs.

Mix of rentals and older homes keeps prices relatively low
Local Realtor Taneisha Nicholas with Gulf South International Realtors says, “[Plum Orchard] has lots of older houses and rental properties. Homes in Plum Orchard are “Doubles, apartments, and raised single-family,” Nicholas says. The area has many raised cottages, ranch houses and duplexes. There are also American Foursquares and shotgun-style houses. Many of the residences are made of brick, and lawns tend to be small here. Prices range from $98,000 to $300,000, making this one of the most affordable neighborhoods in the city.
Only a few townhomes exist in the Plum Orchard neighborhood for residents to live in.

Local parks offer space for games, pets and relaxation
Green spaces dot Plum Orchard, and Pradat Playground is one of the most popular. Brewery hosts trivia, skate nights and seasonal crawfish boils
The Faubourg Brewing Company is just below Plum Orchard. Family and dog friendly, the 15-acre brew park hosts skate nights, cooking workshops, board game nights, and a Thursday happy hour and trivia night. There are even crawfish boils every weekend in season. The oldest operating neighborhood brewery in New Orleans, this state-of-the-art facility supports the community it serves through financial contributions to charities as well as by using resources responsibly and creating a safe workplace with fair pay. Begun in 1907, Faubourg became one of the South’s largest, most innovative breweries, and today, the tradition is proudly carried on.

Lakefront Airport helped pioneer land and seaplane travel
Another important aspect of Plum Orchard is its proximity to the New Orleans Lakefront Airport. Opened in 1934, the manmade arrowhead-like peninsula juts into Lake Pontchartrain and was the first land and seaplane airfield in the world. Built on land reclaimed from the lake, the construction cost $4 million. This enormous sum was even more astounding considering the Wright Brothers’ flight at Kitty Hawk was only 30 years before. In the 1950s, it became a general aviation airport, and runways were added to accommodate private, corporate, military, and commercial aircraft. The Art Deco main terminal originally had tennis courts, a swimming pool, a post office, and a surgical suite. After Hurricane Katrina, the architectural marvel underwent a $17 million restoration. The largest airport in America at the time of its opening, the building has terrazzo floors, marble paneling, aluminum lighting fixtures, plaster friezes, and eight murals by Xavier Gonzalez.
