Once the country estate of founding father Alexander Hamilton, Hamilton Heights is a residential neighborhood deeply rooted in greater Harlem but with an Upper West Side atmosphere. Situated between West 135th Street and West 155th Street along Upper Manhattan’s hilly western edge, the area benefits from sweeping views of the Hudson River and a growing number of eclectic restaurants. A historically half-Black, half-Spanish-speaking Caribbean area that holds fast to its heritage, the neighborhood has also become popular among young families and creative professionals looking for more space and value without having to leave the borough.

Main thoroughfare Broadway has an endless offering of eateries and bars. Though just under a decade old, 1970s-style The Honey Well bar seems to have been around forever. Grocery stores Food Universe Marketplace and Key Food stock all the essentials.

Old-school luxury and Hudson River views for less
Like much of Riverside Drive—a leafy boulevard stretching from the Upper West Side to Washington Heights–Hamilton Heights features upscale prewar condominiums and co-ops with ornate architectural details. On this “Gold Coast” stretch, buyers can choose from individually named Beaux Arts and Art Nouveau-inspired buildings. While two bedrooms cost $700,000, classic sixes and sevens are priced from $1.9 Million to $3.5 Million. Direct access to the Hudson River Greenway
The Denny Farrell pedestrian bridge overpasses the Henry Hudson Parkway to connect West 151st Street with the Hudson River Greenway, a bike and walking path spanning the entire length of Manhattan. “There’s a touch of uninterrupted nature over here,” says Dobson. Further south in the neighborhood, Riverbank State Park has a riverfront pool, up-to-date playground, Carousel and ample sports facilities.

Young Hamilton Heights residents can attend Upper Manhattan’s top-performing public and public charter schools. Students might begin at PS 153 Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Elementary School, with a B-minus from Niche and a separate gifted and talented program. They can move on to C-plus-rated Hamilton Grange Middle School, one of only four schools in the area named by Teach for America as Schools to Learn From in 2019. The specialized, A-plus-rated High School for Mathematics, Science, and Engineering at City College has been awarded as the best public high school in the state.
