A "small-town feel" on the Mississippi
About 4,000 Minnesotans live in the city of Newport, whose entire western border runs along the Mississippi River. Just a few miles southeast of Saint Paul, this primarily residential city has prided itself on a rich sense of community for over 120 years. “You do kind of have a small-town feel, but you’re very close to all the developments of Woodbury, Cottage Grove. Then, of course, the city life of Minneapolis and Saint Paul is less than 20 minutes away,” says City Administrator Joe Hatch.

From 1800s farmhouses to 2020s Craftsman builds
U.S. Highways 10 and 61 run north to south through the center of Newport, flanked by loosely gridded streets with homes from the mid-1800s onward. Residents west of the highway are usually within blocks of one of Newport’s four Mississippi River overlook parks, where locals walk their dogs, take photos and drink in views. Longer-standing homes in town include 1920s bungalows, 1930s Tudors and farmhouses older than Newport itself. Mid-20th-century constructions — Cape Cods, ramblers and split-level homes — are also common. Townhouses from the 1980s to the early 2000s also pop up around the city, while the Bailey Meadows neighborhood to the northeast is filled with 2020s Craftsman constructions. These can cost $800,000 or higher (especially for a six-bedroom, 4,800-square-foot home). Meanwhile, smaller, older detached homes start around the low $200,000s and townhouses start in the $100,000s.

A school serving Newport since 1888
Part of Newport’s historic charm is its longstanding public institutions, from the post office that’s stood since 1857 to the public library first opened in 1889. Newport Elementary School is another of these, having first welcomed students in 1888. Today, the school has a B-plus from Niche and about 250 students from pre-K through fifth grade. It welcomes families for year-round events — including a game night — thanks to active parent organizations. Just east of city limits is the B-rated Oltman Middle School, home to nearly 1,000 sixth through eighth graders. Oltman offers classes that help students focus on their STEM skills and prepare for their not-too-distant careers. High school students in Newport head about 2 miles out of town to East Ridge High School. Rated an A-minus, East Ridge High has 2,000-plus enrollees and many acres of athletic facilities.

"More parks than any community around here"
Newport residents needn’t leave the city to enjoy a friendly sports competition with friends and family, though. “Newport, per capita, has more parks than any community around here,” Hatch says. “A lot of folks love to enjoy the parks and the mature trees.” Loveland Park, a 67-acre plot on the west side of town, welcomes visitors to enjoy a pickup baseball game, practice in the batting cages, and hit the basketball and tennis courts. For a peaceful walk beneath dense tree cover, locals can traverse the nature trails at the 80-acre Bailey School Forest Park. Those wishing to exercise their green thumbs can rent one of 16 raised soil beds at the Newport Community Garden.

Prime rib, pancakes and polar bears
Whichever side of the highway locals live on, several walking bridges let them easily traverse Newport and visit its several local businesses. On the west side is Tinucci’s, an Italian joint that’s operated since 1958 and delights diners with its popular prime rib. To the east is North Pole Restaurant, which started in 1947 as a soda fountain — incidentally, right where Tinucci’s currently stands. Today, it serves homestyle eats, including mammoth pancakes, beneath moose lodge-style décor. That is if moose lodges had friendly, life-size polar bears waving at customers when they walked in the door. No grocery stores operate in Newport; the nearest supermarket, Hy-Vee, is about 2 miles south of town.

Work locally or in the Twin Cities
Working residents can often stay in town to get to work for the day, with SPS Metals and a Marathon oil refinery operating in and just outside the city, respectively. Thanks to the centrally located highway, Saint Paul commuters can get to the city in roughly 10 minutes.
