A riverside Norfolk suburb with everything close by
Lafayette-Winona is a peaceful neighborhood between the Lafayette River and Tidewater Drive near the heart of Norfolk. The quiet, rounded streets conform to the natural shape of the river’s coastline at the western edge, allowing older homes to overlook the river and marshland. With additional access to Norfolk Public Schools and Old Dominion University (ODU), as well as downtown entertainment and dining, the neighborhood provides a slice of suburban life near the city's heart.
Older riverside Norfolk cottages
In Lafayette-Winona, well-maintained front lawns are often landscaped with neatly shaped hedges in curved garden beds with ancient oaks hanging over them. This greenery is matched with Victorian and Colonial Revival homes standing tall next to smaller Arts and Crafts and Coastal Cottage-style homes. Homes in the area can go from a two-bedroom house at around $275,000 to a four-bedroom at about $500,000. “The neighborhood is not a newer suburban area, so it provides a nicer old selection of houses than other Norfolk neighborhoods,” says Robert Puentes, an ODU graduate and CEO of the Eno Center for Transportation, a transportation think tank.

Playtime for Norfolk puppies and people
On the banks of the Lafayette River are the Lafayette Residence and Dog Parks, the only parks in the Lafayette-Winona area. The playground's neutral browns, greens and blues give the impression that the climbing structures and slides are naturally occurring landscape features. The adjacent fully fenced dog park is great for residents to take their pups to burn off some energy; it offers agility course equipment and plenty of grassy fields to run in.

Great food across the Lafayette River
Lafayette-Winona is primarily a residential area, but great food is just a short drive away. The Fishin' Pig is a nearby eatery offering smoked delights from the land and the sea. Many locals also head to the Highland Park neighborhood, a 3-mile drive west, next to ODU’s campus, for additional dining options. Residents can pick up groceries at the Walmart Neighborhood Market, just a 2-mile drive away on East Princess Anne Road.
Streets, sidewalks and Norfolk light rails
The Lafayette-Winona area shares many similarities with Norfolk, as it is so close to the city's heart. “Norfolk has more sidewalks than other cities,” Puentes says, which means there are plenty of places for locals to “walk, jog or bike.” However, car use is significantly emphasized for heading downtown. The city also offers residents the Hampton Roads Transit bus system and Norfolk Light Rail for public transportation.
Fun with animals and historic boats
Just a mile and a half away, The Virginia Zoo offers over 170 animals and attractions to enjoy. Norfolk’s Harborfest celebrates the area’s maritime heritage annually in June with fireworks, historic wooden boats and family activities. The event draws in thousands of visitors daily over three days and is the largest festival in Norfolk.
Living by the water in Norfolk
The Lafayette-Winona neighborhood can offer a picturesque view of the river, but that comes with the common Norfolk flooding issue. However, the city is working to fix it and is even a “leading city in terms of resiliency initiatives for flooding caused by climate change,” Puentes says. The Eastern Virginia Medical Center is a 3-mile drive away for medical care and hosts both the Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters and Eastern Virginia Medical School. Residents must also keep traffic in mind as the Norfolk area can quickly become overrun due to the multitude of bridges and tunnels throughout the city.
