Historic neighborhood near Lake Merritt
The neighborhood of Trestle Glen took shape as Oakland was becoming an auto manufacturing hub in the 1920s, and businesses began setting up shop west of Lake Merritt. As the iconic Tribune Tower went up downtown, home builders established neighborhoods on the east side of the lake, one of those being Trestle Glen. Today, Interstate 580 separates it from the lake and the neighborhoods to its south, giving Trestle Glen a secluded feel. But downtown is easily accessible by car, and for some residents the historic Lake Merritt pergola and the Lakeshore Avenue commercial strip are a short walk away. “One of the great things about Trestle Glen is that it’s off-the-beaten path but more convenient than some of the other affluent neighborhoods in Oakland,” says Rich Fleming, a Realtor with Realty ONE Group Future and a longtime resident of the area. “It’s close to Lakeshore and Grand Avenue, where there are a ton of shops. It's a great place to walk around, really a spectacular place to live.”

Homes display unique styles and modern features
The parklike setting of Trestle Glen was designed by the Olmsted Brothers, whose family firm designed New York City’s Central Park and several national parks. Streets wind through its gentle slopes, shaded with palms, pines and oaks. The median year the homes were built was 1925 and each home displays a distinct personality. A Craftsman is just down the street from a two-story Georgian. Tudor-style homes are offset by stucco in surprising colors. And 1920s traditionals are reworked with contemporary design elements. Homes with two or three bedrooms range from around $800,000 to $1.5 million. Homes with four or five bedrooms run from $1.5 million to $1.9 million. Larger homes with extensive remodeling run from $2 million to $2.6 million.

Shops and eateries line Lakeshore Drive
Just west of the neighborhood, angular street parking lines Grand Avenue and Lakeshore Avenue to accommodate the many daily shoppers and diners. The City of Oakland encourages local businesses to open up by providing grants, loans, support services and other resources, and among many established restaurants in this area a new one recently opened up. The Peach is owned by a local chef known for California-Thai favorites. A Philz Coffee has replaced the Starbucks, and Arizmendi worker-owned bakery sells bread, pastries and pizza. There are a number of burger joints, bars, and taquerias near Trestle Glen, as well as some chain stores such as The Gap and Trader Joe’s. The 1926 Grand Lake Theater, a landmark Art Deco building, anchors the shopping district and screens first-run movies.

Parklike setting encourages walking while Lake Merritt offers water fun
One common form of recreation for Trestle Glen is strolling around the neighborhood. "I'll see people hiking, jogging and walking with their kids and family, especially on Saturday mornings," Sandhu says. "It's very family oriented. When I've done open houses here on the weekends, I would see families walking up, with parents pushing a stroller and a coffee in their hand." A set of stairs on Mandala Boulevard leads up to Oak Grove Park and a wooded trail that runs through the interior of the long block to Paloma Avenue. Many forms of recreation are offered at nearby Lake Merritt, the nation’s first wildlife refuge and a sanctuary for gulls, egrets and herons. The 155-acre lake was created when a dam was built in 1869, and a necklace of lights hangs on 126 lampposts installed in 1925. Sailboats, canoes and kayaks are available for rent. It hosts tennis courts, a baseball diamond and Children's Fairyland, a kid-sized theme park.

School district provides choice for parents
Trestle Glen students can take advantage of Oakland's school of choice system, which lets parents apply for the school their child will attend. Crocker Highlands Elementary School has an A-minus grade on Niche. It sits at the top of the hill and brings the community together with events like the Crocker Carnival and a walk-a-thon fundraiser. Edna Brewer Middle School and Oakland High School have B-plus grades on Niche. Oakland High School offers five areas of specialization to prepare students for college and careers.

Easy access to San Francisco across the Bay Bridge
With its location just north of Interstate 580, Trestle Glen is convenient to downtown Oakland, which is 2.5 miles away. San Francisco is across the Bay Bridge, about a 13-mile drive. The Highland Hospital is just 1 mile south of the neighborhood, and the Oakland Airport is 13 miles. Public buses stop on Park Boulevard and connect to the BART station downtown.
