A suburb with access to major cities like Washington, D.C. and Baltimore

Named after Maryland’s 34th governor, Oden Bowie, the suburban community of Odenton offers residents and future homebuyers access to its commuter train station, local parks, trails and shopping centers. “It’s a great location to not live a city life but still live near the city,” says T.J. Alves, a 5-year resident and Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Homesale Realty. “I know the area like the back of my hand; it’s home base for me. I know there’s an attraction to the location of where we are—you’ve got nice homes being renovated and modernized, multiple shopping centers with different stores, restaurants and grocery stores. Things like that bring the community together.” Odenton neighbors Fort Meade, the NSA headquarters, and is within commuting distance of Baltimore, Annapolis and Washington, D.C.; making it a prime spot for commuters or those who enjoy weekends away. Crime statistics for Odenton are not readily available.

New subdivisions, as well as condo and townhouse communities

Odenton’s manicured subdivisions and new constructions still feel spacious and private, even though neighbors are nearby. “One of my favorite things about the area is it doesn’t feel overbuilt,” says Josh Ducoulombier of ExecuHome Realty. “There are newer communities, a wide range of home styles…and a ton of trees.” The median single-family home price is about $715,000. On the lower end are cozy Cape Cods, split-level houses from the 1970s and 1980s, and ranch-style homes.

Closer to that median price are colonial-inspired builds with four or more bedrooms and new constructions from the last five years with Craftsman aesthetics, brick and vinyl siding, two-car garages and manicured lawns. A few homes cost between $900,000 and $2 million and often consist of very large estates on sweeping lawns with private pools, finished basements and luxury interiors.

Odenton is also home to a series of condo and townhouse communities, with hundreds of units in the area. These units can range between $200,000 and $400,000 for attached brick townhouses or smaller apartment-style condos. Those that cost between $450,000 and $700,000 can include larger builds with four or more bedrooms, two car garages and three-story floorplans. There is also a selection of townhouses that are detached on their own small lawns that feel more like villas and can cost around $800,000.

Odenton’s MARC commuter rail station and access to major highways

The Odenton MARC commuter rail station is located on the north side of town and takes passengers south to Washington, D.C. and north to Baltimore in about 30 minutes either way. “I think it’s a great suburban area for people that work in Baltimore and D.C.,” Alves says. “The MARC train passes right through.” The station also hosts the area’s annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony on the tracks’ west side, by the Odenton Heritage Society. Drivers can benefit from fast access to Interstate 97, Route 3 and the Baltimore-Washington Parkway. The Baltimore Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) is about 11 miles away. The University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center is about 7 miles north on New Cut Road, Odenton’s closest emergency room.

Local parks, trails and indoor attractions like ice skating and the cinema

When it comes to recreation, there are several options for laid-back sports, indoor exercise and outdoor adventure. Thomas A. Dixon, Jr. Aircraft Observation Area is located within Friendship Park. Here, guests can watch flights take off from Baltimore/Washington International Airport. Golfers can head south to the Night Hawk Golf Center driving range or farther down to either the Walden or Crofton country clubs. WB&A Trail off Strawberry Lake Way is a five- to 10-mile-long paved path for hikers, bikers or dog walking groups. Gambrills-Odenton Recreation Council (GORC) Park has multiple sports fields and a playground. Those living in Piney Orchard can take advantage of its community pool and playground. Avid hikers can head over to the many trails that lead behind Piney Orchard Elementary and cut through the wetlands around pools of water like Cattail Pond, Heron Pond and Turtle Pond. For indoor fun, folks can check out the Piney Orchard Community Center or the Piney Orchard Ice Arena.

The WB&A trail goes from Odenton to Bowie and spans 10.5 miles through Gambrills.

Craft breweries, national grocery brands and locally owned restaurants

Annapolis Road, Piney Orchard Parkway and Route 3 are home to several major grocery stores, fast food restaurants and locally owned favorites like Cooked Crab Brewing Company or Buck Murphy’s Bar & Grill, a popular spot for watching O’s games. “The firehouse in Odenton does food truck events from the spring until the fall every Thursday,” Alves says. “Their food truck festivals always have 30-50 food trucks for people to come out and try.” Waugh Chapel Towne Centre has familiar brands like Target, Dick’s Sporting Goods and Wegmans, as well as the area’s Regal Stadium movie theater.
