Large estates near shopping and parks
A drive along Glenbrook’s streets takes people past large, unique homes that feel like their own world within the gated communities that make up the neighborhood. However, one turn out of the area makes it clear that residents are anything but isolated. “The location is tops,” says Tami Murphy, broker associate with the Nichols Hills office of McGaw Realtors with over 10 years of experience. “You’re close to the Nichols Hills community without paying the high taxes there. You’re close to everything here – mainly shopping.” The sprawling Penn Square Mall is less than 1 mile away and is just across the street from a smaller shopping center. Retail is not the only nearby amenity, with Lake Hefner about 3 miles away. Downtown Oklahoma City is about 7 miles away.

Variety of homes can cost $1 million
Oak and cypress trees fill the large, grassy lawns of Glenbrook. Horseshoe-shaped and standard driveways branch off the wide streets. A variety of homes fill the community, ranging from stately French and neoclassical architecture to new traditional houses and ranch styles. These properties span decades, built any time between the 1960s and the 2010s. Prices for a single-family home can range from $600,000 to $850,000, although larger properties over 4,000 square feet can cost $900,000 to $1.1 million. “While there are million-dollar homes in Glenbrook, you can still find value in all the houses,” Murphy says. Waterford is a gated community of townhouses and condos in Glenbrook. “It’s the only gated community in Oklahoma City with a 24-hour security guard on call,” Murphy says. “There’s also a maintenance person on-site to take care of things. Glenbrook receives a CAP Index Crime Score of 2 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4. The Federal Emergency Management Agency says that the neighborhood has a very high risk of tornadoes. Lake Hefner and surrounding parks
Lake Hefner is about 3 miles from Glenbrook. On the water, kayakers and canoers paddle away while anglers try to reel in their next catch. Boat races are also held from April to October, several sponsored by the members-only Oklahoma City Boat Club. The only activity not allowed in the water is swimming. The lake has a 17-mile shoreline that is dotted with parks. Cyclists and runners can often be seen along the trails surrounding the lake, especially the shaded paths at Bluff Creek Park. The Stars and Stripes Park has a sprawling, patriotic playground with three structures for kids to explore. A skate park and golf course are also in the area. If families are looking for somewhere that is a little more dry, they can head to Kite Park in Nichols Hills. There, they can swing, have a picnic or enjoy a summer concert by the Nichols Hills Band. At the Belle Isle Library, patrons can explore the extensive catalog or participate in the full calendar of events. These include study halls, write-ins and arts-and-crafts sessions.

Penn Square Mall and nearby shops
Glenbrook is surrounded by retail and dining options, so residents only sometimes need to make the 7-mile trek into Downtown Oklahoma City. Murphy mentions Bellini’s Ristorante & Grill, which resides in the northwestern part of the neighborhood, although her recommendation comes from more than the establishment’s Italian cuisine. “It’s a great place to go during a tornado because it’s underground,” Murphy says. “The best way to access it is through the underground parking garage.” At the nearby Tucker’s Onion Burgers, patrons can enjoy a fried onion burger – a state-wide staple with grilled onions and American cheese - in a retro setting. Penn Square Mall is just south of Glenbrook and features more than 140 stores, including Macy’s, Apple and Eddie Bauer. Belle Isle Station is a shopping center surrounding the mall, including Walmart and Nordstrom Rack. Residents can do most of their grocery shopping at Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods.
